Include informaon for the month of April 2022.Greengs Brothers, Ladies, Family and Friends, I gave my Monthly arcles the heading that I did because as many of you know, my lovely Lady Mary and I do a lot of traveling for Shrine and Masonic events all over the state and across the country! The long drives give us lots of me to think, plan and discuss. Our travels lately have taken us to Houston, Texas to see our son and his family, as well as aend the Inaugural Ball for the new Arabia Potentate, Ralph “Corky” Bynum and his Lady RuthAnn as we have goen to be good friends with them over the last few years. From Houston, we ew to Las Vegas to aend the East/West Shrine Bowl and its various events, and spent a couple extra days hanging out with 14 other ZOR Divan and Past Potentates and their Ladies who also journeyed out for the game. Aer being in Las Vegas, we ew back to Houston for a couple more days with family and aended a chili cooko at Arabia Shrine that was sponsored by the Arabia Alchemist Unit. We had an unevenul drive back home aer 12 days on the road, which allowed us to reect on the events we had just aended.In the next few weeks we’ll be ‘Behind the Wheel’ as we travel to the Clown Party, Shrine/Mason Day in Tomah, and a number of Club and Unit meengs.I would also like to explain my Potentates Pin design that I have chosen for this year to represent me. The red scooter represents the ZOR Mavericks unit that I have been a member of for the past 30 years. The scooter, as well as the uniform being worn by the rider is a close representaon of our scooter and present uniform. The Mavericks started in 1984 and were named the Mascoun Mavericks as many members were part of the Mascoun Shrine Club that is based out of Waushara, Marquee, Green Lake, and Winnebago Counes. Someme in the 1990’s, the name was changed to ZOR Mavericks. We ride 1986 Honda Spree Mopeds, and parcipate in about 25 parades a summer. We used to parcipate in 35 parades each summer, but needed to cut back as members aged out. Some of the founding and long-me members of the unit are Harvey Reilly and the late Paul Handa, Bill Reier, Bill Downie, Bill Seaman, and Irv Heller. My Lady Penny and I plan to ll up the gas tank and start visiting as many Clubs and Units as we can throughout the year. It’s already been a busy January with the preparation for the Annual Meeting and Installation. Zor concluded the 2023 Annual Meeting and Installation of ofcers on January 14th at the Radisson Hotel in La Crosse. The day started off with the Annual Meet-ing and progressed to the Installation of the newly elected Divan for 2023. MWGM Paul Tourville along with Imperial Sir Jim Smith and his Lady Alice were in attendance as well as many other dignitaries, Nobles, their ladies, friends and family. Following the Installation of Ofcers, a banquet was held with 145 in attendance and to bring the evening to a close, entertainment was provided by Country Music singer, song writer and comedian, Kip Attaway. Kip lives in Jackson, Wyoming and has a connection to the Shriners as his daughter at a very young age was diagnosed with spinal meningitis and was treated by Shriners Hospitals. Kip shared his appreciation for the Shriners as he told his daughter’s story during his performance. I’m very appreciative to the late Illustrious Sir Bob (Colonel) Giesler for appointing me to the Divan in 2016. Although our time together was short following my appointment, due to Bob’s passing in 2018 I learned so much about the Shriners and how it operated at the Divan level. Bob was a great mentor and inspired me to follow his lead in 2023 with my motto in promoting Mentoring and Membership. During the Annual Meeting I was honored to have Bob’s son Errin nominate me to the position of Zor’s Potentate for 2023.In appreciation to all of the support and help with Installation, I would like to thank the following for their dedication and hard work in making the event successful: Illustrious Sir Larry Hanson and his Lady Jill, Illustrious Sir Gary Cuskey and his Lady Judy, Illustrious Sir Mark Severson and his Lady Sheri, Chief of Staff Al Coenen and his Lady Linda along with Todd Wolhert. Larry was the Installing Ofcer, Mark held the position of Installing Marshall and Gary was the Installing Chaplain. Let’s make 2023 a year to remember!A Potentate Trip meeting is scheduled for February 11 at 2:00 pm and will be held at the Zor Temple Ofce. If you are unable to attend the meeting in Madison a Zoom meeting will be set up for you to attend from your home. A link to the meeting will be sent out via eblast. Those interested should plan to attend the meeting and/or zoom in for details with regard to signing up for the trip as well as other details pertaining to the trip. The trip is scheduled for October 7-14, 2023. See the ier in this month’s Zephyr.Remember to mentor any of the Nobles you may have brought into Zor. Page 5February 2023 • Zor Zephyr MagazineMidwest Shrine Association 2023 Summer SessionOsman Shriners, Alexandria, MN Save these dates!!!August 23-26,2023 Illustrious Sir Al Brueggen and Lady Penny are hoping many Zor Nobles will include in their 2023 plans, attendance at the Midwest Shrine Association 2023 Summer session hosted by Osman Shriners. The famous Arrowwood Resort & Conference Center in Alexandria, MN will be the Headquarters Hotel and location of many activities including the marketplace, golf tournament, and Friday night dinner & concert by the lake.This annual convention is a family friendly Shrine event with activities for all Nobles, their Ladies and families. There will be two parades (one on Thursday evening and one on Saturday morning), Ladies Luncheon, Unit Competitions to name a few activities. Zor has included in its 2023 budget nancial assistance for unit men who participate in the MSA parades and/or competition. This assistance will be in the form of a reduced cost of the Noble’s room cost, an allowance for milage, & coverage of a portion of the registration fee. Once we know what the costs of these items are, we will commu-nicate that information to your unit leaders. This assistance will be determined as it has been in previous years, prior to last year. Zor’s leadership will be traveling to Alexan-dria in late February to attend MSA Mid-Winter Session where we anticipate gathering this information.You are encouraged to visit the following website now and often as the host temple is continuing to update the https://www.msa2023.org. The onions were planted at the end of November. If they keep on growing like they are, they should be ready the last week of April or the rst week of May. They do have a new Agriculture Commissioner so they are not sure if he is going to follow the past regime or just say “sell them when you want to.” If that is the case then they might be ready before the last week of April. With the rising cost of transportation due to fuel prices and raw product cost going up 13% due to input costs we are going to be raising our price to $12.00 a bag. I will contact you by April 3rd for your order.Remember, this is an agricultural product so the availability of the onions is all dependent on Mother Nature. Pre-selling onions is easy to do, you can put up a ier at a local business, hospitals, bus garages, or local watering holes and they sell themselves. The ier is available on the website under Zor events then hit the Vidalia onion button or I can email or send you a ier if you would like one. If you want to learn how to do this just ask the Zor Imagineers. I do have extra room on each truck for more onions. The trucking company has already been paid for, therefore the extra onions you sell are pure prot. If you have never sold any before and need help, let me know and I can help you out. Remember, when you buy a bag for yourself take 4 more to sell to your friends and neighbors. The question before the Nobles and our leaders is whether we can build the future of a growing, active Temple.The means became available on December 22, 2022 when Recorder Robert Gorusch and I received the email we’d been awaiting for three years – the sale of the Zor Shrine property in Madison had closed. Just a little less than $3 million was transferred to Zor’s account, with another $3.9 million to come in the next two years. In a moment, we no longer owned a property that was costing almost as much as our total membership dues to maintain. Instead, we have the beginning of an endowment which will generate income. The question be-comes – to what end?To answer that, let’s take a look at where we are and the options open to us.Zor Shrine in 2022 is a steadily shrinking organization of Masons dedicated to the greatest Masonic charity in history and to strengthening our fraternal bonds through social occasions. I became a Shriner in 2000. At the meeting where I was initiated, I watched the annual Parade to Glory report income of about $1 million, which went to the Shrine Hospitals. The meeting was well attended, more than a little boisterous and a lot of fun. Our meetings today are still fun, but attendance has dropped a great deal. In the past few years, we have struggled to raise the funds needed to keep Zor going, making donations to the Hospitals a secondary priority. Nobles, it is hard to hear this but true. We have recruited Masons to join the Shrine and all too often, they hear mostly about selling calendars, rafe tickets and other fund raising. It’s amazing that we succeed in recruiting as many as we do. Asking people to join a new organization, commit time and pay dues in order to spend a lot of time on fund raising for that organization is a tough sell. We will probably always raise money for something, but the resources coming into our coffers – used wisely – can put us on a different course. What alternatives are available to us? 1. Keep doing what we’re doing, with less need for fund raising. We could look at the new resources as a chance to reduce the burden of fund raising, and continue operations much as they currently are. If we do that, in 10 years, the Black Camel will inevitably win. Our membership is older, old enough that we will lose a very large number of Shriners between now and 2032. The Black Camel will be especially hard on Dane County, where there have been far fewer new Shriners than those passing on. We can counter many things, but mortality is not one of them. To be blunt, if we continue on our present path, at some point in the next 20 years, Zor will be forced to consolidate with other Temples or, Zor’s assets will be turned over to Shriners International. All that will remain of us will be records, photos and old issues of the Zephyr. Of course, none of us want to join other membership organizations now passed from the scene. I haven’t done a formal analysis of what our Temple demographics portend, but it is likely that the coming ten years represent our last chance to turn Zor around. It is undoubtedly tempting to think of using some or all of the sale proceeds to buy another building. Please consider some facts about that. Freemasonry has more than enough building space at various places in Wisconsin to nd a home for Zor – if it needs one, but let us also be realistic. Another building is not a solution to the challenge we face of attracting Now What??? Zor’s Fate Depends On

Page 7February 2023 • Zor Zephyr Magazine Choices We Make NOWmore members. There have been many Masonic buildings constructed in Wisconsin in the past 30 years. Some of them are in highly visible locations. The buildings have not turned membership around. Men don’t join buildings. They join other men. 2. Make Zor More Fun With Less Fund Raising. We can use the resources coming to Zor to make membership more attractive by eliminating fund raising and emphasizing social activities. This is promising, and it would make recruiting more success-ful. We need to nd a way to bring in hundreds of new members. Bring in hundreds of new members is limited by a critical limit – the number of Master Masons to draw from. We need more Masons if we are to have more Shriners. If Masonic membership is not increasing, we gain Shriners only by increasing the percentage of Masons who join us. To put it another way, we cannot expect to revive Zor unless Freemasonry more broadly revives. 3. Grow the Shrine and Freemasonry with the Shrine as a Key Inducement. Freemasonry is more important in today’s world than ever before. Even 30 years ago, the basic values of Freemasonry were seen as the broad foundation of a solid society. Can anyone say that today? We live in a world where truth is subjective, friendship is transactional and morality is all but scorned. And yet, we also live in a world where people hunger for a basic faith in God which informs their lives and guides their families. There is a market for what we are selling. We just haven’t had the means and insight to sell it.I do not have the answers. But the answers are out there. There are Shrine Temples and Masonic Lodges which are growing. We can study what works for them and make it work for us. We can reach out to the Grand Lodge and help with their efforts to rebuild our gentle craft.This will only happen, though, if we approach the issue seriously and be willing to change. We have gotten used to The Way Things Are. And we are inclined, at least initially, to respond that “We’ve Always Done it This Way” when someone proposes change. If that is what we do, then please go back to option 1 above, because that is what will result.Why We Have A ChanceThe Nobles of Zor voted at a special meeting several years ago to authorize the sale of the Temple property. It was a courageous decision. It was not easy to part ways with a building that had been the center of Zor’s activi-ties since the mid-1980s. Our Nobles voted to sell because they agreed to nd a new path forward. That vision needs to be implemented. The means to turn Zor around have been provided.The will must now be applied. Let’s do it.

I would like to thank Al and Penny for asking me to be their Membership Chairman for this upcoming year. Brian Dunham, Ron Malcolm, Steve Livernash and I will be heading to membership school in February. I am hoping to return with some great in-formation for sharing. With the black camel taking a toll on us in 2022 and the previous year we need to in-crease our membership. We dropped below 1000 members at the end of 2022 and because of that, we will lose one voting member at Imperial Conventions. As you know we can only get new Shriners from one place, and that is from Master Masons from your local lodges. We have good news in that situation. The Grand Master talked to us at our annual meeting about this. The lodges have been raising more new masons this past year compared to previous years and have more that are in the pipeline. The Grand Master did tell us that there is some misconception out there that Masons that are involved with other appendant bodies, and their involvement with the lodge is wrong. Masons that are involved with other appendant bodies are 5 times more likely to be involved with their local lodges compared to ones that are not. With that being said we have Masons out in our lodges that can be Shriners. One thing that we are going to be doing is having a membership team. We are going to have membership people in different areas of Zor to help with membership. We are going to try something different in the 8 lodge districts that Zor covers. Over the next two years, we are going to have pork chop dinners in at least two different areas in the districts, and in some of the larger districts, we will have three. We are going to be asking you to bring non Masons to it. At the dinners, we are going to be promoting the appendant bodies and hopefully get some interested new Nobles. More information will be coming out shortly. We will be starting this in the middle of March so keep an eye open for it in your district. Remember, every one of you has the ability to sign a petition for new Nobles. If you need a petition let me know and I will help you get one. Dan Gunderson gave an update on the Club and then we had dinner. We all enjoyed the great meal made by Keith and Stephanie Foulk and Bruce and Loretta Fransway.Chief Rabban, Al Brueggan was the Installing Master with help of 2nd Ceremonial Master, Ron Malcolm and Steve Lasure. The following are the Installed Ofcer’s for 2023: President: Keith Foulk 1st Vice President: Mark Hink 2nd Vice President: Bob Sembach Secretary: Steve Lasure Treasurer: Ian MattsonAfter the installation, the new President, Keith Foulk, handed out a schedule of events for the rst half of the year to include a couple Euchre tournaments, possibly a bowling tournament, and possibly a East/West Shrine game viewing. Colleen Schwartz spoke about what the Eau Claire Ladies Auxiliary has been do-ing to include a plant sale. They made a donation of $3300 to the wheelchair fund, $300 in hospital Christmas gifts, and $412 in toy donations.Mehara Shrine ClubNOBLE MARTIN CALLAWAYNoble Martin Callaway received his 50 year membership certicate from Zor Shrine on Friday November 25, 2022. Martin was active in the La Crosse area and belonged to the La Crosse Shrine Club. Martin later passed away on New Year’s Eve 2022. Martin led a full life of community service and was tremendously active in the Masonic fraternities.

Sir Al Brueggen, became a member of the Divan in 2016 by the appoint-ment of Past Potentate Bob Giesler. Al and Penny were neighbors and not very fond of each other in their younger years. Al-though it isn’t known what occurred to change their feelings for each other they went on a date in 1979 and the rest is history. In 1981 Al married “the girl next door”. Al was born and raised in Sparta and is the youngest of seven children. He attended St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Sparta Sr High School, graduating in 1979. Penny was born in Tomah, Wisconsin and has lived in Sparta since 1972 when her family moved back to Wiscon-sin after living in Minnesota. Penny graduated from Sparta High School in 1981. While in high school, Al held a part-time job with Fish & Wildlife Services at Fort McCoy and Penny held a secretary position for a local Sparta business. After graduating from high school, Al accepted a job with Army Lodg-ing at Fort McCoy and held the position of Chief of Support Services. He attended Hotel Management School at Penn State University, graduating in 2007. In 2002 and 2007 he was nominated and received the US Army Com-mander’s Award for Civilian Service as Super-visor of the Year both years. In 1983 Penny accepted an Administrative Assistant position with Monroe County. Penny worked in the Medical Examiner’s Ofce her entire 38 years but also worked part-time in a number of other County ofces from time to time.After getting married in 1981 Al and Penny enjoyed their life together before becoming rst-time parents in 1986 with the birth of their daughter Jessica and then in 1988 having their daughter Paige. As parents, they enjoyed being a part of what their daughters did. Both Jessica and Paige became members of the Warriors Baton & Drum Corps of La Crosse. Paige was a competition color guard member at a young age and in middle school became a varsity bowler and golfer. Paige is the mother of Al and Penny’s grandchildren, Xya age 8 and Fenyx age 4. She is married to Chris Decorah and is a Probation and Parole Agent for Juneau County. Jessica is the proud fur baby mom to her Boston Terriers Hugo and Onyx. She works in mental health is an Associate Psychologist with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections working at Jackson Correctional Institute in Black River Falls. Al was raised a Master Mason on May 25, 1994, at Valley Lodge #60 in Sparta and in 1997 he became Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He served as Secretary from 2001 to 2004. Al served as Area Administrator for three years for the Grand Lodge of Wisconsin. In 2000 he joined the Zor Shriners, as his passion was to become a Shriner and to drive something with a motor. In 2001 he became a member of the Zor Shriner Midgets holding the position of Captain from 2002 to 2004 and serving as secretary from 2008 to 2018. In 2011, 2012 and 2013 Al chaired a motorcycle ride as a fundraiser for the Zor Shriner Midgets, providing him the opportunity to meet and work with Past Potentate Bob Giesler who appointed Al to the Divan in 2016. He is the current Extra Terri-torial and Zoning Chairman in the Township he lives in and has served in numerous capacities with community groups and organizations. He belongs to the Zor Midgets, Zor Funsters, Sahara Shrine Club, La Crosse Shrine Club, Mecca Shrine Club and Indianhead Shrine Club, Imagineers and Yoshi. Al is also an Associate Member of Tripoli Shrine in Milwaukee.Penny served as the Assistant Director of the Warriors Baton & Drum Corps for many years as well as the Secretary for their Board of Directors for 22 years. She served as a Baton Competition Director for 23 years both on a local and national level. She held a board position for the Boys & Girls Club of Sparta and served as Chair for the Marketing and Development Committees and has been serving on the Boys & Girls Club Golf Committee for 22 years. In 2013 Al retired from Fort McCoy Lodging after 34 plus years and began operating his part-time cleaning business Shine-Brite Cleaners on a full-time basis. Shine-Brite Cleaners is a successful commercial cleaning service he started in 1983 and still operates today. After 38 years Penny retired from Monroe County. Al and Penny purchased a local bar called the “Foxhole Pub & Restaurant” in Sparta in 2012. Penny operates the business, and Al serves as the “mainte-nance man and dishwasher as needed”. It was a local establishment that they frequented for years, and the story is told that Al purchased it for Penny as a birthday gift. Al states that “It is the gift that keeps on giving”.Al and Penny have purchased and renovated a total of four houses over the years and are passionate about their work in all of them. Both Al and Penny have totally enjoyed their time with the Zor Shriners and enjoy spending time with their Shriner friends, spending time with family, friends and their grandchildren. They both love traveling and road trips in their Mustang convertible. Penny enjoys interior design, home decorating and scrapbooking. Al’s hobbies include driving the Shriner Midget cars, golf and home renovations.

To say we are exhausted would be an understatement!! LolTo date, both of our boys have undergone multiple cleft surgeries here at Shriners and each time we are completely BLOWN AWAY by the level of care we receive!! From the doctors, nurses, custodians, kitchen staff, and administrators...all of the incredible pro-fessionals are masters in their trade!!Today, M went in for surgery around 8:00 am and nished around 11:00 am. Nurse Monica (ANGEL ON EARTH) immediately jumped to his side and cared for M’s every need!!Within an hour, M was eating, moving around, and smiling. By 2:00 pm, he was ready to y back home to Kansas City!! WOW!!!!Our family will be forever and eternally grateful for this incredible organization!! Please remember if you have not paid your dues for 2022, you can not parcipate in any Shrine acvies: this includes parades, vong at your club meengs or any special temple meengs. The reason for such strict rules for paying your dues on me is the insurance provided by ZOR for clubs and unit acvies does not cover anyone who has not paid their respecve dues.As of this wring there are 174 Nobles of ZOR who have not paid their dues for 2022. If you are one of these Nobles, please get your dues paid as soon as possible as your respecve clubs and units need you!This represents 17.09% of our total membership who have a balance and are considered by Imperial to be in arrears. The total dollar amount of Nobles with a balance is $14,455.00. Just think what we could be doing with the funds if all our membership wiped out that $14,455.00!I will have aended the Winter session of the Midwest Shrine Associaon that was held in Green Bay in the middle of February. I met with my counterparts from dierent temples on membership and we all agreed that we need to make a concerted eort to increase our membership in 2022. I will provide more informaon in future arcles. If we all don’t do our part to increase our membership ranks in both the Blue Lodge and the Shrine, we will cease to exist in the year 2035. Membership is not a one person operaon, but it takes all of us to recruit, retain, restore, build relaonships for our great fraternity to survive.If you are a rst line signer for a Noble, no maer how long he has been a member of ZOR, reach out to those Nobles and see how they are doing. If they have not aended a club meeng or funcon, see why, and invite them to the next meeng. Just the same, if the Noble has not paid their respecve dues, nd out if they are experiencing a nancial hardship or other reason. We are here to assist our worthy brothers in their me of need. There are numerous ways we can all assist those Nobles who are experiencing dicult mes and it can be done anonymously.Upcoming major membership event is the Summer Ceremonial and Potentate’s Ball to be held on May 14, 2022 at The Lodge of Mauston in Mauston Wisconsin. In addion to Blue Lodge, Kevin is the Past High Priest of the Wautoma Chapter of Royal Arch Masons, PTIM of Oshkosh Council, and Past Commander of Oshkosh Commandery. The meeting opened with President Montie Kramer Welcoming guests and members. Installing Ofcer Ill. Sir Chuck Miller PP along with Installing Marshall Ill. Sir Steve Peterson PP complet-ed the installation of position chairs. The gavel was handed over to new Fun-sters President Ken Olm from Marsheld, Wisconsin. A spirited meeting and dis-cussions of new Public Awareness events owed from members. The Feztival of Trees will be added to the event list in 2023 with enthusiasm from Noble Randy Webb and the group. Holiday Spirits / Funsters craft show led to various reports of success. A detailed Divan report from Noble Steve Livernash was shared then questions and answers followed. All Zor Shriners and their ladies are encouraged to attend this annual event, a perfect opportunity to be the 1st line signer for a brother from your Masonic Lodge. Even if you are not spon-soring a candidate this spring, you and your lady are still invited to partake in the weekend activities.For those who are arriving on Friday there will be a mystery dinner show that is being set up by Dan and Kelly Smithburg. In addition to the Ceremonial on Saturday morning, both men’s and ladies luncheon’s will follow. In the afternoon will be the Arch and Knickerbocker degrees. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland!The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine.For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine.
