May 20th is our Spring Ceremonial at the Radisson Hotel in La Crosse; all Nobles, friends, and family are encouraged to attend, as we welcome new Shriners into Zor and encourage them to become part of our Clubs and Units. It’s not too late to get more candidates signed up to belong to the greatest fraternity on earth. The weekend starts out with a Friday night dinner cruise on the Ole Mighty Mississippi for those who signed up. Saturday will be a fun-lled day with the Imagineers lighting up the room as the day’s events take place. After dinner on Saturday evening there will be entertainment to ease the evening into Zor’s hos-pitality for all to enjoy. If you have not attended a Shriner event in some time, I personally invite you and yours to join us. We would love to see you participate and become involved again. As the summer approaches, parade season is upon us, so be safe and enjoy your time with fellow Nobles. Grand Lodge is also around the corner (June 1-3) with the making of another Zor Grand Master Shriner. We are very proud to be planning to Fez our in-coming Grand Master with his new Zor Fez. On July 2 - 7, some of our Temple elected Divan Ofcers, Past Potentates and other Nobles will attend the Shriners Imperial Session Convention in Charlotte, NC. This is a great opportunity for the Ofcers of Zor to learn and help guide our Temple with what we believe to be in the best interest for our nobility. Com-radery with other Temples in our Association is an important part of Imperial Session as well. Other upcoming events include Shriners Uncorked, which will be held in Sparta on May 13th. We are looking forward to any-one interested in volunteering at the event. To join us, please let Todd Wohlert or myself know. This is a Temple fundraiser, so everyone is encouraged to help support the three-hour event. Money raised at this event goes back into Zor’s general fund. New this year at Shriner’s Uncorked there will be live music by Joe Cody throughout the day. As always, the tasting, prizes, and fellowship are always the best part; come out and enjoy the afternoon with friends, family, and fellow Nobles. Gun Rafe tickets! It’s that time again. Tickets can be acquired by contacting your Club or Unit Divan Reps. This year we are trying something new by holding a Sportsman’s Banquet at Milford Hills in Johnson Creek on September 16, 2023. The rearm winners this year will be able to pick up their prize right at Milford Hills and take it home with them or take a per-centage of the prize value in cash as was done years ago when the drawing originally started. The day will include a sport-ing clay shoot, dinner along with a walk around rearms and other tables that will offer prize opportunities. Some of these activities are still in the planning stages. This event will also be part of Zor’s Annual Sportsman’s Rafe with the drawing to take place that evening. This event is open to the general public as well. There are several Nobles planning the event and we are looking forward to this being one of Zor’s major fundraisers. If you have any interest in helping with this event contact Larry Hanson or Dale Olson. As always, there are many events planned all year in Zorland. If they keep on grow-ing like they are, they should be ready the last week of April or the rst week of May. They do have a new Agriculture Commissioner so they are not sure if he is going to follow the past regime or just say “sell them when you want to.” If that is the case then they might be ready before the last week of April. With the ris-ing cost of transportation due to fuel prices and raw product cost going up 13% due to input costs we are going to be raising our price to $12.00 a bag. I will contact you by April 3rd for your order.Remember, this is an agricultural product so the avail-ability of the onions is all dependent on Mother Na-ture. Pre-selling onions is easy to do, you can put up a ier at a local business, hospitals, bus garages, or local watering holes and they sell themselves. The ier is available on the website under Zor events then hit the Vidalia Onion button or I can email or send you a ier if you would like one. If you want to learn how to do this just ask the Zor Imagineers. I do have extra room on each truck for more onions. The trucking company has already been paid for, therefore the extra onions you sell are pure prot. If you have never sold any before and need help, let me know and I can help you out. Remember, when you buy a bag for yourself take 4 more to sell to your friends and neighbors. The Blue Lodges are the main source as they have been rais-ing more Masons this past year than they have done in previous years. They have raised 150 new Master Masons in the last seven months, and there is still a lot more in the works. If you divide the new Master Ma-sons up evenly between the three Shrine temples, we have 50 in Zor’s area that we could make into new No-bles. Even if we get the average number in the state that gives us 12 new Nobles. We encourage you to go to your Blue Lodges, be active in them, and if you have not been there for a while, get re-acquainted with your Brothers. When you go back, look around and see which members are Shriners, and why the others are not. You might hear a statement from some of the Brothers that once they become Shriners, they don’t get involved with the Lodge! The truth is, Masons that are involved BARRY AUSENPAST POTENTATEZOR MEMBERSHIP 2023in other afliated bodies are ve times more likely to be active than ones that are not. We are having a Spring Ceremonial coming up in May so nd some new candidates and bring them into the Shrine. When you bring in a new Nobles make sure you get them involved as soon as you can. It is a known fact that if you take them to your Club or Unit parties, they will stay active. If you don’t get them involved, sooner or later, they might drop out, and that is not what we need. We need to keep all the Nobles we have. Your Club and Units will be contacted soon to help clear up the Nobles that are delinquent in their dues. When you are contacted to reach out to the members in your Club or Unit, remind them that they have not paid their dues. If some of the members are having a tough time with the dues or are in a nursing home, hopefully, your Club or Unit can do the brotherly thing and help them out. If that does not work, reach out to your Divan Rep., and let them know the circumstance, they might be able to get some help from the Temple.Shriners International is proud to celebrate some of our membership wins over the past few months as its mission continues to resonate with men and their families worldwide.

Page 10 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comNoble Dan Smithburg’s journey to becoming a Ma-son started when his daughter Alicia asked her Great Grandpa, Everett Smithburg, about the ring he was wearing – it was a 50-year Masons ring. Noble Dan joined the Faireld Iowa Clinton Lodge #15 AF&AM in the summer of 2008. In the Fall of 2008, he joined the York Rite Bodies. In 2011 he became Master of Clin-ton Lodge #15, with his proud grandfather by his side every step of the way serving as the Tyler. Grandpa had always dreamt of attending the Easter Vigil at the George Washington Masonic Museum in Alexandria VA. On Easter of 2009, Grandpa (at age 91) joined Noble Dan & Lady Kelly with their sons Greg & Kevin and daughter Alicia on a trip to Washington DC to do just that! It was such a memorable trip that they took Grandpa again during the spring of 2011. It was a Friday night sh fry at the Foxhole in Spar-ta that started Dan’s journey to becoming a Shriner – thanks to the persistence of Lady Penny Brueggen! She showed up at the table with a measuring tape and the rest is history! Dan became a Shriner on December 7, 2019 and is a member of the Zor Shrine Midgets.Dan grew up in southern Iowa. He joined the Iowa National Guard in 1985 and was deployed to Desert Storm in 1991. He had just started seeing Lady Kelly, so their rst 6 months of “dating” was through the US Postal system. Kelly secretly made the trip to Volk Field, WI to surprise him upon his return from Germa-ny. He worked for Dexter Foundry for 23 years and accepted a position with Dexter’s sister company Leer Inc in New Lisbon, WI in late 2011. Ironically, moving to where their love story had started 25 years earlier. In 2019 he joined Rockland Flooring in Rockland, WI where he is currently VP of Manufacturing, overseeing plants in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada. August 23-26,2023 As reported in the April issue of the Zor Zeph-yr, Illustrious Sir Al Brueggen was to have led a large contingency of Zor Nobles to the Midwest Shrine Association (MSA) 2023 Winter Session in Alexandria, MN. But mother nature changed those plans. The critical business of the win-ter session was instead held on Tuesday eve-ning April 18th via a zoom meeting with MSA ofcers and temple representatives participating. During this online session Zor’s Ill. Sir Gary Cuskey, was elected 1st Vice Pres-ident of the MSA . The annual Summer Session is a family friendly Shrine event with activities for all Nobles, their Ladies and Fami-lies. There will be two parades (one on Thursday evening and one on Saturday morning), Ladies Luncheon, Unit competitions just to name a few activities. Os-man Shrine has a strong Bag Pipe Band unit that is planning a special mass band participation in two parades, barnstorming, and lots & lots of Fun! Fun! Fun! If you are Bag Piper Drummer, or sword barrier with a kilt come and join them. They also taught conrmation classes at First Lutheran Church. Noble Dan coached middle school football for 15 years. They also own a small home next to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway which is a big part of the Smithburg tradition starting with Noble Dan’s father who was on a pit crew from the late 60’s through the 70’s. They host 40+ friends and family during the month of May every year.Their son Greg & his wife Allena live in Black River Falls. Greg is Yard Manager for Rockland Flooring, and Allena is a Recreational Therapist at Eau Claire Hospital. Daugh-ter Alicia lives in LaCrosse and works for Aveanna Health System. Their youngest son Kevin lives in Charleston, SC, and is a Materials Processes & Physics engineer at Boe-ing. Oldest son Andy passed away in 2006, his children (Kiana 16, Cody 15) reside with their mother in Guam.

Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMECCA SHRINE CLUB EASTER EGG HUNTThe 3rd Annual MECCA Shrine Club Easter Egg Hunt was held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the Tomah Masonic Center. It was a cold and snowy day but that did not deter the children as there was a great turnout. The day started with Potentate Al Brueggen holding a Cold Sands ceremony for Brother Joe Refsland, after which his Lady Ashley, Fezzed him.Registration for the day started at 1:00 for children ages 2-10. We had 70 sign-ups, which was down from previous years, possibly due to the weather. Families enjoyed many activities including having their pictures taken with the Easter Bunny or in the Midget’s parade Prowler. They also enjoyed playing with bean bags, guessing the amount of jelly beans in a jar and having the Mistz or Firehouse Jesters tie balloons.The day’s big event was, of course, highlighted by the search for 3000 eggs. Children under three did their collecting while the others found their eggs outside. All the excitement was completed very quickly (about 20 minutes) with bags bulging at their seams.Following the egg hunt, about 20 Easter basket door prizes were given out. Each child upon registration was given a tick-et for the drawing.The Easter egg committee would like to thank the Nobles, their Ladies and friends that helped with the day’s activities.

Conducting the ceremony was Illustrious Potentate Al Brueggen, Chief of Staff Al Coenen, and Outer Guard Ron Chamberlain. Joseph’s Lady Ashley fezzed our newest Noble. Joe wrote “359 days ago I started my Masonic journey, two days later I helped at the Easter Egg Hunt for Mecca Shrine Club, and today I ofcially joined The Zor Shriners. He spoke about the Stillwater bridge affecting the local community. He then talked about the Kwik Trip company and its impact on the local communi-ty. Rob noted the existing New Richmond and Amery’s new store locations. Rob highlighted the excellent healthcare and hospitals Westeld consortium which is tethered to Regions Hos-pital of Saint Paul, MN that offers cancer treat-ments. He then talked about tourism in the community with Cedar Lake Speedway, one of the best clay tracks in the US, Apple River tubing and Riverwood Nature Center in Star Prairie. Rob spoke of the chicken hatchery that is being renovated to an environmental and education center with walking trails. Lastly, he spoke about the New Richmond High School Hockey team winning a state title over a neighboring Amery High School. Ed Swenson gave an update on the Vidalia Onion sales. Everybody should be preselling, $12 for ten pounds. Order forms are found in the Zephyr and from Barry Ausen. Ed put out a challenge for everybody to sell 100 pounds. Tyler Behr, vice president of SCVSC spoke about upcoming events. There is a Road Runner meeting, April 10th 6:00 pm at the New Richmond Legion Hall. May 1st is the next board meeting time and location TBD. Mike Kastens then gave a Divan report from the March Divan meeting, which included Grand Master, Paul Tourville. One initiative for this year is increas-ing membership. An emphasis is to make the Shriner Ceremonials more of a “wow factor”, for all persons involved. What does a candidate want or expect from the Shriver Organization? Making the ceremonials memorable and fun is key in exciting the candidates to become active in the Shrine Clubs with their family included. As is known, Shriners come from Blue Lodges. How can we entice these men into becoming a Shriner? Be a Mason now is an online portal that men apply to become a Mason. This portal has seen quite an inter-est as 2000 applications were evaluated. From these initial numbers 700 have started their journey to become a Master Mason. Mike informed the crowd of upcoming events which included the April 21st Mehara Friday Fish Fry at the Blind Tiger Bar in Colfax, April 28th Friday sh fry in Wausau preceding the April 29th Divan quarterly meeting and the Wausau Quarterly meeting. You can nd more information and the sign-up in the Zephyr. May 13th is the Shriners Uncorked event at Dub’s Pub in Sparta. May 19th is the Spring Ceremonial in La Crosse, and more detailed information can be found in the Zor Zephyr. June 30th the New Richmond and the Star Prairie Lodges are jointly fundraising at the New Richmond Legion Hall with a live band and supper starting at 4:30pm. This fund raising is to send local kids to the Shrine Circus. The fth grade of Summerset is going to the circus on March 23rd. Mike then introduced the guest and dignitaries; Past Potentates Larry Riemenschneider and Lady Julie, Barry Ausen and his Lady Becky, Chief Rabban Roger Keller and his Lady Tammy, and our Potentate, III. Sir Al Brueggen and his Lady Penny. Al noted that the Road Runners were a gem of Zor, he appreciated coming up to our event and thanked the Road Runners for what they do.Roger then commented about the Osman Circus coming up. He reminded the group how much Osman gave in sup-port to the East – West Shrine game. Roger then asked if anybody had free time to go over to the circus and volunteer. The Osman facilitators will nd something that they need help with and will appreciate the services. MSA is coming up in Alexandria, MN and is extremely close in proximity. It is a fun event with parades and activities for the ladies to do. The MSA will have a marketplace to buy a variety of Shrine merchandise. MSA 24’ will be in La Crosse. Tammy and Penny have a lot of activities already planned for this MSA. Roger then mentioned the Knickerbocker Degree being conducted in the Spring Ceremonial. This degree will be different than in the past and urged Shriners to attend.

And on the day he turned twenty one, he wasted no time and petitioned the Wisconsin Rapids Lodge to become a Master Mason. From there, he went on to become a Zor Shriner in 1968, and a year later married his love, Lady Judy. Judy’s father was also a Shriner.Tom’s commitment to the Shrine has only grown stronger over the years. He joined the Zor Funsters Shrine Unit and is still very active. One year, he participated in 52 parades around Wisconsin. Currently, he is the driver of the bubbly and colorful parade bus. Tom and Judy are proud members of the Heart of Wisconsin Shrine Club. Tom also transported many patients for hospital care, which created heartfelt memories.But it’s not just about the Parades and the Fez for Tom - it’s about the impact that the Shrine has on people’s lives. He was deeply humbled when he was told the story of a neighbor boy who was helped by the Shriners. The boy’s mother was initially hesitant to leave her son in the hospital for a month, but when she returned, she found him full of energy and condence, thanks to the Shriners’ care. And that same boy went on to help Tom’s son with his race car, showing the ripple effect of the Shrine’s work.Tom’s commitment to the Shrine has also brought him close friendships, like the one he shares with Karl Gant, who both joined Zor Shrine in the same year. Karl has sent him birthday cards lled with laughter and well wishes year after year. But perhaps the most inspirational moment for Tom came when he was waiting at the reception desk at the Twin Cities hospital. A young boy approached him, grabbed his hand, and said “Thank You, Thank You, Thank You!” When Tom asked if they knew each other, the child simply replied, “No, but you are a Shriner!” The memory still brings tears to Tom’s eyes to this day.Through it all, Tom’s love for his sweet Lady Judy has remained a constant source of support and strength. He takes great pride in wearing the Shriner Fez and upholding its traditional values. Soft-spoken and kind, Tom is a pure and proud Shriner who knows the impact that the Shrine can have on people’s lives.

All Zor Shriners and their ladies are encouraged to attend and even better, to be the 1st line signer on a petition for one of your Masonic Lodge brothers.For those arriving on Friday, there will be a dinner cruise on the LaCrosse Queen River Boat. The dock is a short walk from the back doors of the Radisson. We will be boarding starting at 4:30 p.m. for a 2-hour (5:00-7:00 pm) dinner buffet cruise on the Mississippi River. The meal includes a 2-meat entree of baked ham and chicken, along with mashed potatoes with gravy, carrots, coleslaw, rolls, dessert, with coffee or iced tea. There is a cash bar on board the boat. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland!The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine.For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. March 20th through the 22nd, Brian and I spent 3 full days, learning alongside our counterparts, from all over the world!We joined together to embrace and plan for the next jour-ney on our Divan. During our educational sessions, we listened to multiple speakers and were able to share ideas and struggles, as well as many success stories that each unique Temple grows through. There are so many opportunities for us all within this organization. The ladies’ sessions are especially impactful. To become empowered and engaged in the philanthropy, by learning from the Imperial Ladies is inspiring. First Lady JJ Craven, Assistant Rabban Lady Judy Burke and Trustee Lady Megan Stewart were lled with relevant knowledge that they were so excited to share. Their passion for all of Shrinedom can be felt in their desire to help others in their journeys. We received education in leadership, were introduced to new fundraising ideas for our Temples, and reminded us how very important Ladies mentorship is. My biggest takeaway was in regard to membership. We should be talking about Shriners Hospitals for Children wherever we go. Imperial Potentate Kenny Craven shared a story of one of his experiences with us all. He was on a ight to an event and a young gentleman sat next to him, they began small talk and the young gentleman started to tell him about this amazing organization he was a part of. He explained he was going to attend an event that was all about this great organization. After a bit, he asked Imperial Potentate Kenny Craven if he had ever heard of Shriners and all they do! Of course, you can complete the ending of that story….What a great way to invite other new Nobles and to share with the world what Shriners do….Talk about it!We, as ladies, can make an impact as well. Talk about the Shrine, invite old friends and new friends to your Temple, Clubs and Units events. You truly never know who you may encounter. For all of the new ladies out there, I can’t encourage you enough to become a part of your Shriner’s jour-ney. It can be a very fullling experience. It is truly a family. We met our counterparts from the Midwest Shrine Association (MSA) in 2021. We have all maintained continuous contact and picked up right where we left off the last time we enjoyed one another’s company. Brian and I also were blessed to join a couple from Ohio at one of the sessions, Rollin and Dee, we con-nected with them and exchanged addresses. We talked about farm life and the “good old days”. Even with a generation gap between the four of us, we became fast friends. Family. All ages. All backgrounds. So many stories. From Mexico to Wisconsin. Ohio to Hawaii. All of us, in one place for the very same reasons. The fun, fellowship, and of course the children. I am so thankful, full of new ideas and inspiration to share with our Zor family!All my best, Lady Linda Dunham

Ron and I left this blistery cold weather to enjoy a lit-tle Florida sunshine. Little did we realize how jam packed full of learning there would be and very little time for sunshine. The evening we arrived we met up with all of our counter-parts. You always see others on the Divan that have rela-tionships with Shriners from other Temples, not fully under-standing how they meet so many others, now we know. It is unbelievable how quickly you can make some great connec-tions and have new forever friendships. Second day – cram packed full of getting to meet the Im-perial Line and their Ladies. We listened to several from The Imperial Line, tell their story and their role on the Line. The things I learned were things I probably should have known, however I found it so enlightening. Did you know we have 21 different Shriners facilities across the United States? That the rst patient was treated in 1922 for club foot. Shriners Hospitals, even though we should stop using the word hos-pital, continues to evolve. First treatment was club foot, then polio, burn victims, spinal injuries and more and more. Shriners ChildrensTM provides the very best care, Our doc-tors are innovators – teaching thousands of residents every year. We have 120 touch points of care, in 22 countries, cov-ering over 87% of Planet Earth.We ask for and raise money to make a difference in so many families. Our other breakout sessions were preparing us for our jour-ney to Potentate. Everything revolved around leadership and what makes a great leader. It’s important to surround yourself with those that will help you be successful in your year. Create teamwork, develop dedication and involve-ment, prioritize membership acquisition, support a mento-ring program, encourage an event planning group. Build a GREAT TEAM!!! Select the people who will be behind you every step of the way. Reward dedication and give credit where credit is due. Always remember you will be a Past Potentate longer than you are a Potentate. The Law of Ex-plosive Growth – Leaders Multiply Leaders. Build your team of leaders with different strengths.I then attended the Ladies Workshop and Ron was off to do whatever Shriners do (I believe he learned a lot about the politics of the organization). We listened to First Lady JJ Craven and all of the other ladies of the Imperial Line up. The First Lady talked about her project – “The World is Your Oyster”. This program is dedicated to supporting Shriners Children’s mission to change and improve lives with empha-sis on pediatric sports-related injuries by bringing awareness of the sports-related conditions treated and by helping potential patients and families learn how to access this care. This program shows how our patients’ grit and determination come together with the expertise of our healthcare specialists to over-come challenges and create endless possibilities for success and recovery.We discussed what is the Elected Divan versus what is the Appointed Divan. How to prepare on your road to Potentate. We discussed things that are required of a Divan Lady to include leading by example, sup-porting our Noble, mentoring and above all else hold each other high and NO GOSSIPING. Being enthusi-astic makes others want to be involved. Oh, and all of the fun stuff, like what to wear to what event and how you should walk in and stand, etc. etc. We had great breakout sessions as well, in which we went over different ideas of what other temples do for fundraisers. In the evenings our MSA group got together and went out for dinner to further our relationship. What a great group of people we have met.I’ve always supported Ron on his adventure as a Shriner, have always enjoyed my journey as his Lady, however after attending this event, the passion to be a Shriner has grown even stronger. I further under-stand the philanthropy and what this great organiza-tion does for so many families.

Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland!The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine.For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest.Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
