Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comHappy Spring,MSA Mid-Winter Session was a huge success, thank you to everyone who helped. Congratulations Illustrious Sir Gary Cuskey, the 2024 President of MSA. Clubs and Units should be making plans to attend and parade during the summer MSA, Aug 7-10.The St. Croix Valley Shrine Club hosted a St. Patrick’s Day party and welcomed a new Shriner into the club. We attended a Ceremonial at Osman Shrine where they brought in 10 new Shriners. Feztastic bowling in Eau Claire was amazingly fun as al-ways, bringing in new Shriners as well! The Wausau Potentate’s Dinner is always something we look forward to. Lady Tammy and I are planning to travel to Abu Bekr for the Potentate’s Ball and to attend the Installation of the Queen of Daughter’s of the Nile. Exciting things are happening all over. Remember, there will be no Spring Ceremonial this year, if anyone has someone who would like to become a Shriner so they can parade with your unit. Let me or a Divan member know so that we can arrange cold sands for them.Til next month, Carrot on! Iusiou SiROGER KELLERFrom the desk of

The painless process helps surgeons and specialists understand each child’s unique facial anatomy. The Chicago hospital’s new CBCT installed in early March is a smaller than regular CT machine and uses less radiation. It moves around the child using a coned-shaped X-ray beam. CBCT provides doctors with a 3D image of the child’s mouth, jaw, airway, neck, teeth and ears, nose and throat. “Quality imaging is essential in order to accurately plan and time surgical procedures,” said David Morris, MD, medical director of the craniofacial/cleft team in Chicago.Cone Beam CT (CBCT) technology comes to Shriners Children’s ChicagoWe’re here to provide the most AMAZING CARE anywhere for every child with orthopedic needs!

Page 8 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comBy: Audrey Haugen, MS, CCLS, CPST // Shriners Children’s Twin Cities(Author’s Note: When using the term “child’ or “children,” I am referring to all people from birth through age 18.)Do No Harm. This foundational medical ethic can prove to be rather complex in the provision of health care. The need to make decisions regarding a patient’s care and what is in a patient’s best interest is commonplace for many healthcare professionals. In ideal scenarios, the health care provided minimizes or heals the physical problem that the patient presented with initially, which is such a testament to medical advancements. However, that very same health care intervention, when focused only on the physical body and its present malady, has the potential to cause unin-tended damage to other, nonphysical aspects of the patient and family, namely, their psychological, emotional, social, and/or developmental wellbeing. That is where Certied Child Life Specialists (CCLS) come into play. Informed by years of graduate education, re-search, and clinical training in evidence-based best practice, and empowered by the commitment to create and maintain psychologically safe healthcare practices, child life specialists today spend our careers advocating for the psychological, emotional, and developmental wellbeing of children and families. Child life specialists are experts in child development and in how stress and trauma impact children and families. We thoughtfully fulll our unique and vital role in educating and empowering interdisciplinary colleagues in evidence-based techniques for providing least traumatizing, pediatric-friendly health care. Child life specialists provide care and services directly to patients and families, facilitate support groups and advisory councils, supervise child life students and volunteers, serve on workplace task forces, volunteer with external orga-nizations (local and national), and so much more every day. Here are some highlights of the direct patient care and services provided by a CCLS: 1. Procedure/exam preparation and support: Patients who understand what is about to happen to them are more willing to cooperate, cope more effectively, and are less likely to develop long-lasting trauma from the experi-ence. Informed by child development research, child life specialists are specically trained in how to effectively support children and families through stressful, painful, and potentially traumatizing experiences. 2. Diagnosis and care plan education: Children at different developmental levels have varying abilities to com-prehend the human body and its complexities. Child life specialists study children’s cognitive development, so we understand that children and families commonly develop misconceptions and confusion when faced with complex or new medical experiences or information. CCLSs are experts in communicating with and educating children and families based on their ages and stages of life. 3. Liaising between families and healthcare staff: Child life specialists have a special ability to establish rapport and build trust very quickly with patients and families. As a result, families often share information with us that they may not share with other members of their care team. CCLSs have the privilege of listening to families, asking powerful questions to gather more insights, and then sharing the information learned with the multidisci-plinary team. 4. Developmentally supportive play: Children use play as a way to psychologically process, understand, and make meaning of whatever event just happened. Child life specialists use play and playful engagement as a primary means to build rapport, communicate with a child, assess a child’s understanding and developmental abilities, prepare a child for a procedure or test, and more.DO NO HARM: HOW CHILD LIFE SPECIALISTS... MINIMIZE PSYCHOLOGICAL HARM IN HEALTH CARE

Page 9

Page 9April 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineDO NO HARM: HOW CHILD LIFE SPECIALISTS... MINIMIZE PSYCHOLOGICAL HARM IN HEALTH CARE 5. Therapeutic work with parents/caregivers, siblings, and families: Child life specialists have multifaceted capac-ities to work with the entire family system: parent coaching, therapeutic dialogue about myriad topics, sibling support, and education for and collaboration with the children’s schools and teachers. The work of a child life specialist is deeper than what may meet the eye. On the outside, it can look like fun and games, toys and books, and camps and parties. In reality, Our interactions are every bit as intentional as a physician’s examina-tion or a nurse’s assessments. Deeper psychological work is ongoing during every interaction between a child life spe-cialist and child: even when it looks like we are “just playing.” Every day, CCLSs strive to balance patient care needs with our many other duties, not the least of which is our collaboration with the multidisciplinary healthcare team. It is CCLS’s goal to share our knowledge of evidence-based, effective, cost saving, and safe techniques for health care delivery that attend to a child and family’s physical and nonphysical needs. In alignment with healthcare initiatives to provide care that is both physically and psychologically safe, child life specialists collaborate with leaders and all direct care providers to establish excellence in pediatric care techniques and policy. Together we learn and expand our per-spectives for the betterment of our patients and families, all with the goal of doing no harm ... of any kind. Do you have questions about Child Life at Shriners Children’s Twin Cities? Email: childlifetc@shrinenet.orgAs my wife sat quietly in the corner doing her crocheting, I walked around and saw where we were going to set things up. A gentleman was working on the sound system for the room. He told me that it was not working and may not get xed. I told him, “That would be ne, for the voices carry good in here”. He kind of laughed and said, “We will get it xed”. I went back to my wife and took a seat with her. I waited and waited. Did I get here that early? Suddenly, somebody came around the corner. More people started to come in, and then I relaxed a bit. Before I knew it, the room was full of people. I started walking around selling tickets for all the wonderful door prizes we had, and after all was said and done, we collected over $600.00. That money will go to the “RED SNEAKER” fund. Dale Holmen has done a great job on this for years. Thank you, Dale! At 6:10, the voice came over the crowd and we were ready to start. Dale and his wife did a great job with a version of the “Pledge of Allegiance” by Red Skelton. The “Clown” prayer followed this. After that opening, we all were wondering what the bottle of wine was doing on each table. Dale announced that whoever had a birthday closest to the new Potentate was the winner of the wine bottle. The wine was donated by Karen Owens. His Birthday is May 9th. Congratulations to all winners!! As the evening progressed, carrots kept appearing all over the place. I guess we will have to wait and see about those carrots and the story behind them! As laughter and smiles lled the room, dinner started to be served as a family-style dinner. The smell of baked chicken, Swiss steak, mashed potatoes, coleslaw, and carrots lled the air with an aroma that whet the appetite. The best was saved for last, Ice Cream but no one had to scream for it. As dinner was ending, Dale began with the door prizes. At the same time Larry Hanson PP, started putting makeup on the new “Potentate” as Lyle Fox had done for a long time before Larry, did his “Magic”. As Dale and Larry did their thing, the love and laughter continued throughout the room. When all was done with the door prizes and makeup, we had a “New Clown”. Let’s all welcome Zor’s newest Clown “Karrot Top” better known as (Potentate Roger Keller)! Oh, that might explain all the carrots. Larry did a wonderful job once again. Roger “Karrot Top” Keller made his stage presentation. The room cheered and clapped. “Karrot Top” made a few remarks and introduced his new line of ofcers. It’s going to be a great year!! Suddenly, ashes lled the room. We had a “Star” among us. It may not be “Cary Grant”, but he is ours. In the meantime, First Lady Tammy was asking for support for her project fundraiser. It is for Imperial 1st Lady JoLynn Dickins and Women Impacting Care. Lady Tammy has a beautiful little blue bag lled with rst-aid items. ‘24k Care for Kids Zor Shrine lled the front of the bag. So, getting back to all the carrots, a challenge was issued by Roger saying that if Tammy could raise $20,000 it would be worth him eating a carrot at the fall ceremonial. But since that is a very high goal for any 1st Lady to raise, he set up some steppingstones. If $10,000 is raised, Roger will eat a slice of carrot cake. If $15,000 is raised, he will eat a baby carrot. If $20,000 is raised, he will eat a full-size cooked carrot. Let’s make it HAPPEN!!! To end a wonderful evening, all Past Potentates came down the hallway with their picture as a “Clown” and introduced themselves. They said their real name, and then their “Clown” name. We took a picture of all 11 Past Potentates present. The evening nally came to an end. I don’t think anyone can argue we all had a wonderful evening.MAKING OF A CLOWN By: Noble Brad Andrews

Page 10

Page 10 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comBy: Noble Roger ReasI rst became a Mason in 1960, encouraged by my rst father-in-law and two uncles. They spoke of the trusting, lasting friendships built within Masonry. Since no metal objects were allowed in any lodge at that time, I gained dispensation for my prosthetic leg for entrance. That summer allowed me two months to achieve the Masonic degrees while working at the local paper mill and preparing to move to Iowa with my family to begin my master’s degree. After completing graduate school and returning to Park Falls, my desire to become a Shriner was exemplied by the many opportunities available to assist children who have orthopedic deformities, very similar to mine, and to offer hospital patients nancial support through the Shrine’s philanthropic goals. The Zor Flambeau Clowns Unit formed in 1983 with the support of Potentate Bob Cress, and the mentorship in clown etiquette and attire offered by “Mitzie the Clown”, Zuhrah Shriners of Minneapolis. I served either as President or Director for 23 plus years. The benets, pleasures, and friendships I have gained while being Mason and a Shriner, far outweigh any of my participatory contributions. I have sponsored over a dozen patients and proudly accepted three appointments to the Divan by three admired Potentates. One unique and memorable experience worth sharing happened while crossing the border into Canada. My brother drove the lead truck on our shing expedition through Canadian customs. He was supposed to stop shortly up the road and wait for me as I had all of the “evening beverages” in my truck. Unfortunately, he did not. Knowing of the alcohol limitations per vehicle allowed into the country, I assumed the worst. I pulled over and began to sweat as the ofcer approached my truck. Just as I was about to explain my predicament, he glanced at my window sticker and said, “Go ahead, on your way, Brother.”THE ZOR FUNSTERS The Zor Funsters went on their 1st parade of the year at New (Dublin) London on Saturday, March 16th. Al-though we had to battle some 30 MPH winds, the temperature was in the 40’s which made it warmer than some of the St. Patty’s Day parades of the past.FLAMBEAU CLOWNS MEAT RAFFLEBy: Noble Jesse TihlarikOn February 25th, the Flambeau Clowns held their 2nd Meat Rafe Fundraiser. Overwhelming support was shown by the Potentate, Divan, and all their ladies by making the long trip and helping out. It was a very successful fundraiser and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

Page 11

Page 11April 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineAfter competing in three events in the clown competition at the Midwest Shrine Association Convention in Duluth during the mid-eighties, Roger suggested we take a shortcut to our ve-hicle so he could remove his make-up before at-tending dinner. We ventured through the Sears store near the back of the mall leading outside to the lot where we parked our car. Nearing the exit, Roger spotted the photography depart-ment and hinted he had no professional shots of “Manny the Clown”, and since he was outtted in appropriate hobo attire and sad-faced make-up, why not inquire if there was any availability. ROGER REAS “MANNY THE CLOWN” PHOTO SESSIONAs we neared the appointment desk, several ladies approached us with excitement and vigor in their voices. Following a brief discussion of the reasoning behind the hobo “get-up”, the photographer suggested a photo session with numerous poses for us to choose one or two of our liking. Roger was escorted into a room with several different backdrops and colors schemes. He was positioned in many poses consisting of full-bodied shots, facial close-ups, lying down prone, and several hand positions towards his hat and chin. The crew remained silly with laughter as each camera lens clicked repeatedly. We were escorted towards the appointment desk when the manager suggested we re-turn in one week to view the proofs for any poses we may nd pleasing enough for a portrait of our choosing. As promised, one week later we returned to the Sears store in the mall in Duluth, MN. We were greeted by a much larger crew of enthusiastic young professionals excited to see us and our reactions to their professional display of “Manny the Clown”. And display they did! As we entered an enclosed studio, every wall was completely plastered from ceiling to oor with en-largements of Roger’s photos in each of his poses. We were beyond amazed. The photographer and manager asked if the Sears Corporation could secure the rights to use some of these portraits for the Sears Christmas Promotion in their stores along the West Coast in exchange for our choice of free prints including several 8X10’s and an 11X14. The pic-ture we presently carry in our wallets consists of one of those poses.Several years later, Sharon’s aunt and uncle visiting us from Tacoma, Washington, had the pleasure of spending some time with “Manny the Clown”. Shortly following their re-turn home to Washington, their younger daughter and her family from California came to visit them. Sharon’s Aunt and Uncle shared stories of their recent trip to Wisconsin and pulled out a picture of “Manny the Clown”. Their daughter and grandchildren immediately grasped onto the picture while stating that they had seen a picture of that same clown in a Sears store while shopping in the mall not far from their home.Imagine that?

Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMSA CONVENTIONOn February 29th, The Winter Session of the Midwest Shrine Association (MSA) commenced. Winter? It was in the high forties/ low fties. It felt more like Spring!! We carried on like it was Winter anyway. At the Radison Hotel and the La Crosse Center, Thursday evening, the hallways started to ll up with Shriners from all over. It was like a Concert was to start. Slowly the line got bigger and bigger at the front desk. The sound of suitcase wheels lled the air. In a very short time, the line was gone, and the room was somewhat quite. Before you knew it, Friday morning came. The buses, vans, trucks and cars that pulled up to the front of the building letting people off just showed what a great day this was going to be! Barry Ausen and Al Coenen were in the front door with a friendly smile checking all Nobles in for the day. 14 Temples were on the check-in list for the day. A super turn out for all to partake in the activities to come. ZOR, AHMED, El ZAGAL, ABU BEKR, KHARTUM, OSMAN, TRIPOLI, YELDUZ, AAD, KEM, NAJA, BEJA, ZUHRAH, WAWA and EL RIAD were all in attendance for the day. At 7:00am, breakfast was served to all in the hallway before entering the meeting room. At 8:30, the programs and day started. On the 2nd oor South Ballroom of the La Crosse Center, MSA President Larry Norte, called the room to Order! The Shrine Pledge of Allegiance was started by the MSA Secretary/Treasurer followed by all Nobles. Noble Karl Gant, made the Invocation starting the meeting off. All Dignitaries at the head table were introduced. Grand Masters, and Past Grand Masters were introduced. Scott Pedley, and Joe Harker were among them. A wonderful welcome to the city was presented by Mitch Reynolds, the Mayor of La Crosse. Thanking us for all we do for the community. A few other comments were made, and the elections of MSA Ofcers commenced. Ofcers were announced and all received their Jewel of the elected ofce for the year. Illustrious Sir Gary Cuskey, PP of Zor, our newly installed President of MSA gave his remarks of what he looks forward to the future of our fraternity and his gratitude of where he is now. Bob Keep, Dale Duchscherer, Justin Stoke and Jim Burma gave their remarks by newly elected 4th vice President. Larry Norte, the outgoing President gave his last remarks too all. Karl Gant gave the list, that no one wants to hear, the passing of all Nobles from 2023. Karl, Zor Chaplain gave a very nice memorial service for each unit that lost members in 2023. Each Temple brought a FEZ up to the front and placed it on a table in front of all.A pyramid of the Fez’s where made. As Karl called off a Temple, a member of that unit came up to the table that held all the Fez’s and stopped in front of them all. Karl would read off on how many passed and the name of the Temple. That member would then pick up the Fez that belongs to them and take it back to their table. This would happen for all Temples, until the table was empty. A few announcements from the Secretery/Treasurer were made to all. General Business came to an end. The Installation of MSA Ofcers was to begin. ILL. Sir Doug Kristensen, Potentate EL Riad Shriners, Sioux Falls South Dakota Installation of MSA Ofcers and Presentation of Ofcers Jewels commenced. Page 15April 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineMSA CONVENTIONour newly installed MSA President, gave his remarks of what the outlook is to become in the future of the Shrine and his gratitude of being where he is now! Remarks from newly elected four Vice President’s, Bob Keep, Dale Duchscherer, Justin Stoke, and Jim Burma. The outgoing President, Larry Norte gave a heartfelt speech, leaving his post. After lunch, the mid-afternoon presentations, Committees and Association reconvened. Meetings started up right away. Talks on Jurisprudence, Laws, grievances and appeals, Shriners International Financial Overview, Marketing and Communications, standing committee meeting, and Association Meeting, all this was going on in the La Crosse Center 2nd South Ballroom. So much information, so much to learn from. We are going to make Shrine so much better and stronger in the future. As some of these meetings were commencing, other Units had individual meetings. The meetings and speeches nally came to an end. A well-deserved break was had by all until dinner. A walk by the river, a drink in the hospitality room, a nap or maybe even a dip in the pool, whatever appealed to you. At 6:00pm, social hour began, thank you EL RAID SHRINE for the hors d’oeuvres. The dinner bell nally rang. Ill. Sir Gary Cuskey, PP, opened dinner. Karl gave the opening prayer. Two Chanters from two attending temples sang the National Anthems from the Countries of USA and Canada. Gary gave a toast to the ofce of the “UNITED STATES” and the “KING”. Gary made some announcements about his V.I.P table and others. A wonderful dinner was served, and all enjoyed it. After dinner was done, Imperial Sir Matt Sturlaugson, introduced his Imperial ofcers. He also talked about the Boat Races. A few more comments were made, and the dinner ended. The evening continued with snacks and refreshments in the Hospitality Rooms. We nally called it a night and were looking forward to the next day. Saturday morning came, and at 8:30 am Karl Gant gave the Invocation. Don Thomson, MSA Sect/Treas., gave the results on the Boat Races. 86 new members, 12 replacements cards. A total of $1,085.25 dollars was raised for the Twin Cities Hospital last evening. GREAT JOB ALL!!! A membership push followed. How can we build our membership? Work with Master Masons. The Midwest Shrine Association is #4 in the region, which has the highest percentage of Master Mason Conversion. We have 14,000 Clubs and Units and looking to make more. Great Job by All!Hope you all had a wonderful time. Safe travels home. Hope to see you all back with your families in August for the Summer session.

Page 18 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comBy Noble Merl Steffen Club members and their ladies met at the Han-cock Lodge in Ellsworth WI on February 9th to have a Valentine’s party. Those in attendance enjoyed the meals of Italian meatballs or grilled chicken. It was a lively evening that included a memory or knowledge challenge as three cou-ples played a version of the dating game. This provided great entertainment for all those in at-tendance. Tyler Behr started the Saint Croix Valley Shrine Club meeting that included a fellow Noble gift-ing. Noble Tom White gave our own Illustrious ST. CROIX VALLEY VALENTINE’S DINNERSir Roger Keller a new heavy-du-ty gavel to help him in governing Zor Shrine Meetings. The meet-ing highlights included an update from the Onion sales representa-tive (Ed Swenson) and comments from Sir Roger Keller, Potentate. Ed provided informed the group that the onions are growing now and are expected to be delivered late April to early May. He then prompted the nobles to get out and get presale orders. Roger introduced the Zor 2024 pa-tient ambassador, Gioia Schutte, Gioia’s mother, Kim Schutte, and his Lady Tammy. Gioia will be making appearances at many of the Zor events and activities. We are looking forward to seeing her at many Shrine events. Roger then gave updates on Zor out-ings and expectations for the win-ter and summer MSAs. He then spoke about the Osman circus coming to Saint Paul and the goal of sending 500 kids to the circus. It was a great evening to get out and have brotherhood with the nobles and their wives.

April 2024 • Zor Zephyr Magazine Page 19By Gioia Schutte Hello Shriners!I have been more active and busy this month since it is toward the end of my weightlifting and club volleyball season. I competed in weightlifting on March 19. I also went to a sitting volleyball camp in Oklahoma.Sadly, I have had to miss some Shriners events since I went on spring break and I had a few volleyball tournaments, but the last one that I went to is the St. Croix Valley S.C. Valentines dinner. The food was DELICIOUS, I love a good salad and some bread with a little side pasta. When I went back for seconds on the salad, Roger made fun of me, but a few weeks later he was dressed up as a carrot clown, so it’s okay. I only have two more tournaments in my club volleyball season, with one of them being an all-weekend tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where I’ll be able to go with my bestie Meta. As for weightlifting, that is only a summer camp, winter, fall sport at my school, but I am currently do-ing track and eld where I throw shot put and discus, but we spend about an hour and half in the weightroom three days a week.I also went to my school play with Owen and Meta. The play was “The Mousetrap” by Agatha Christie. I have read some of Agatha Christie and many “thriller/mystery” books, so I ended up guessing the ending, which is something that I tend to do. I love mind puzzles and “detective” games. My friend Olivia and I solved unsolved case les together and it was quite fun!For spring break, we are going to South Dakota to do some hiking and maybe shing and horseback riding. Another little thing about me is that I love horseback riding, and I take lessons in the summer. I hope I can con-tinue them this year. I also love baking and have done lots this past month. I have made some protein snacks and three different types of cookie bars. I will have more updates on spring break, club volleyball/ camps, weight-lifting and how track is going next month!!By Noble Merl Steffen Members of the Saint Croix Valley Shrine Club visited a fellow Shriner recuperating from a re-cent health issue. Club members visited past Road Runner leader, Jerry Wilkins at the Kinn-ic Health Nursing Home and Rehab Center for lunch. Those in attendance appreciated the sub sandwich meal, thanks to Illustrious Sir Roger Keller. During lunch many members reminisced about parades they had attended with Jerry leading the pack. These memories provided some comic relief. We all left him in good spir-its and hope this brightened Jerry’s day.ZOR PATIENT AMBASSADORSAINT CROIX VALLEY LUNCHEONPicture front bottom left around the table, Lance Van Damme, Illustrious Sir Roger Keller, Larry Nelson, Barry Ausen, Jack Thomas, Larry Wiegand, Susan Robinson (Jerry’s daughter), Landon Wilkins (Jerry’s grandson), Jerry Wilkins, Merl Steffen, Ed Swenson, Doug Hoffman, Mike Kastens, and Bob Hering. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Page 24 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comSubmitted by: Brenda GaulkeA Little HistoryMost Chapters in Wisconsin started in the 1880’s and they were instituted with 25 people to start a chapter. It goes without saying, but they had to deal with what was available at the time. Maybe it meant no running water, had to chop rewood for heat, had to travel via horse and buggy but they persevered through this, and they continued to gain members. Wisconsin continued to grow and over the years we had as many as 289 chapters! Sadly, today we have only 35 chapters, so what happened? Chapters grew largely in the 40’s & 50’s with women not working outside the home. As the work force in America changed so did Eastern Star, membership shifted, people relocated for their employment and soon chapters were changing. Suddenly many opportunities were available to the women who were at the time eligible. Eastern Star was in a place where they had to make some changes to their membership. Even with the best of intentions and opportunities for members many chapters closed, others consolidated and today many are holding steady with a core group. Where can you nd us?This is a great question, as stated earlier we have 35 chapters, and in Zorland, let’s just say we have many. Clear Lake- Northwest Chapter • Dodgeville-Dodgeville Chapter • Ellsworth-Ellsworth ChapterJefferson-Martha Chapter • LaCrosse-Ruth Chapter • Madison-Starlight ChapterMarsheld-Everett Chapter • Middleton-Melody Chapter • New Richmond-Willow River ChapterOregon- Oregon Chapter • River Falls-Kinnickinnic Chapter • Shullsburg- Shullsburg ChapterSparta- Sparta Chapter • Tomah-Lemonweir Chapter • Viroqua-Viroqua ChapterWautoma-Wautoma Chapter • Wisconsin Dells-Kilbourn Chapter • Wisconsin Rapids-Rainbow ChapterWe are in many communities, and you are always welcome to join in our festivities and fun. Many chapters have exciting ways to serve within their community and just to list a few projects.Parades: as you are aware there are many parades and OES joins in on some. Brat Stands, Pancake breakfast, Friday Night Fish Fry, Pie sales, bake sales, Pasty sales, craft shows are just some of the places that you might see us. But let’s know forget about the BackPack for kids, Coats for Kids, School Supply Collection and distri-bution, Trunk or Treat, Our Neighbors House or other similar shelters, our county agencies that collect for kids, battered woman or homelessness. We raise money for things within our own communities to, our libraries, re departments, EMT’s high school scholarships and so much more. It is why we believe that we are good people doing good things for good reasons. At this point I know that you too are very excited about joining, so check us out at an activity, or online at www.wioes.org look under the How to Join tab! Contact our Grand Secretary and she can give you the name of a contact person in our community. Reach out! I personally look forward to having you join our ranks!WISCONSINThe Firehouse Jesters opened the 2024 parade season in LaCrosse with the Saint Patrick’s Day parade. They met after-wards and discussed the upcoming parade season and a potential list of ex-pected parades.FIREHOUSE JESTERS

The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
