Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comIusiou SiAL BRUEGGENGreetings and Happy Holidays! As I write this article and reect back on the year Zor has had, I think of the many events and a lot of miles, not just by me but by all of our dedicated Nobles, their Ladies and families. Many of us put a lot of time and effort into trying to keep our Clubs, Units, Temple, and Lodges strong, yet so many times our members fall by the wayside and miss out on the fun we have. I challenge you to get your new and current members involved. Mentor your members, they don’t know what they’re missing, and we have so much to offer. Recently, Lady Penny and I spent the weekend in Wiscon-sin Dells with the Yoshi Shrine Club and had a wonderful time with Nobles, their families, and friends. This Club was formed several years ago by Past Potentate Barry Ausen and has turned into a very family-oriented event for younger Shriners. Some of the members bring their kids and some of us, our grand kids. The Nobles spend time socializing and the kids are able to enjoy time in the water park along with many other activities on site. This Club does have some rules set by their members which are standard in the Temples that have Yoshi Shrine Clubs. The members must be under the age of 55 and 364 days old to join. Once a Noble turns 56 he is still a member but is no longer able to be an ofcer or voting member, which in my case is not a bad thing. This is a great Club to get a young Shriner family involved with. The annual event is held in Wisconsin Dells and normally takes place the second weekend in November each year at the Wilderness Resort. Other Yoshi events take place through-out Zorland as time permits. For more information on this Club, contact Past Potentate Barry Ausen at 715-248-7844.My travels to the UW Whitewater Shrine football game on November 11th, along with several Divan members was again a great experience. The “King” (shrine patient) was asked to do the coin toss to kick off the football game. This is quite an honor for the patient. The patient’s family along with the Divan are in attendance on the eld to witness the event. Earlier on this same day the Sahara Shrine Club held it’s annual cash drawing at Herring Inn in Jefferson where our shrine patient “King” pulled all the lucky winner names. See the story in this issue.I want to give a big “Thank You” to my 2023 team – As my term comes to a near end, I want to thank the Divan, Support From the desk ofstaff and Committee members for their support. Our Tem-ple ofce team in Madison lead by Recorder Past Potentate Bob Gorsuch has been one heck of a support team. Past Potentate Bob Gorsuch oversees our ofce and has now for a several years. Bob and his staff are very knowledgeable and proactive. I cannot thank Bob enough for his support and guidance through my many years on the Divan and most recently as Potentate. The ladies in the ofce (Pat and Amy) “thank you” for what you do! The two of you are always willing and able to help me out. Also, I want to thank Past Potentate Larry Hanson our Temple Treasurer who has been my mentor for the last several years. Larry is always on top of his game while keeping track of me and the Temple budget. Larry, “Thank You” and Lady Jill for your guidance. The Elected Divan, what a team. Chief Rabban Roger Keller, Assistant Rabban Brian Dunham, High Priest and Prot Steve Livernash and Oriental Guide Ron Malcolm; gentle-men I “thank you” for the time, effort, and commitment you have put into supporting me, our membership and our Tem-ple. Appointed Divan, committee chairs and support staff you all deserve a round of applause for your efforts as well. Thank You all!Annual Membership dues! Nobles, the Shrine is one of the cheapest memberships around. If you haven’t paid your membership dues yet, please don’t hesitate, we strive to keep our membership strong and we want you to be a part of it!Be Humble and Kind!Alan J. BrueggenZor Potentate 2023

The weather was great, and the crowd was wonder-ful.This year we had 87 vendors that lled both the inside of the arena and about 30 on the outside. We had 157 bas-kets for the almost 2000 visitors to choose from on the rafe tables and raised over $12,000.00 for the Shriners Children’s Twin Cities. If all of that wasn’t enough to draw in the visitors, we also had 7 performers that entertained the crowds both days. We even had Stevens Point Mayor, Mike Wiza and Portage Counties Sheriff, Mike Lukas joined in the show and introduced the Blues Brother’s to the stage.Mayor Mike Wiza, Sheriff Mike Lukas introducing the Blues Brothers.

Page 11December 2023 • Zor Zephyr Magazine...CRAFT, VENDOR, AND MUSIC SHOWThe spirit of raising money for non-prots doesn’t stop with the Shriners, Deb invites the local non-prots to the show to help them raise money. This year we had the Wetland Conservation League of Potage County rafing off a Weatherbee over and under shotgun and out of the proceeds they generously donated $1,300.00 to the Shriners. We also had a vendor that donated all their sales proceeds to the Suicide Preven-tion Program. We also raised $500.00 for the Portage County Sheriff’s Dept. K-9 program. What a wonderful way to spend a day and help out the community in so many ways. So, if you missed all the fun this year, don’t worry, we will have another one next year on the second week-end of October at the Arnott Lions Community Park, 6867 4th St, Stevens Point, WI. Hope to see you there. Sheriff Mike Lukas receiving the $500 checkfor the K-9 unit from Deb Williquette.

Page 15December 2023 • Zor Zephyr MagazineBrady, 20, is a patient at Shriners Children’s hospital, and can be seen racing three nights a week in stock car #64. “I race Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and would love to race for my full-time job” Brady said.In most ways, Brady is just like any other young adult. In his free time, he loves hunting, shing, and bowl-ing. But he does it all with a prosthet-ic leg. When he was 3, Brady was in-volved in a lawnmower accident and lost part of his foot.Several years later, Brady and his family heard about Shriners Chil-dren’s Chicago at a bowling tour-nament. He came to Shriners Chil-dren’s Chicago as a young teen with a very bowed leg and a foot pros-thesis. He had surgery at age 13 to correct the bowing. Doctors at Shri-ners who specialize in limb differenc-es also shortened Brady’s leg a small amount so he could have a better t in a prosthesis. After surgery, the Pediatric Orthot-ic and Prosthetic Services team t Brady with a below-knee prosthetic leg. He has had four prosthetics since then as he grew. This allows Brady to be able to participate in activities he enjoys today like racing.Brady recently attended a golf out-ing representing Shriners Children’s Chicago as a patient ambassador. He was able to show off his pros-thetic and car and he even signed autographs. His goal is to race a ‘late model’ and one day join a team as a full-time driver.THE BRADY POLCEN STORY

Page 16 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comA MAN’S TEARSBy: Linda DunhamI can only recall two separate times in my life that I witnessed a man cry. The rst time, I was ten years old and my Grandma had passed away. This was my Dad’s mom and they were very close. He relied on her for many things, even in his adult life. She lived with us in her last years and was very special to us all.The next time, I watched a man cry was my father-in-law. It was out of compassion for me, as I was sharing some things with him. He is one of the most genuine people I have ever known. Both of those times clearly made an impact on me, as I remember them still today. However, the last experience I had was even more life changing. One may not realize the im-pact they are making in the moment, but that ripple effect rolls on.Recently, Brian and I attended the “Denim and Diamonds” event, to recognize some of our treasured hospital drivers. When it was time for each driver to stand and tell how they began, why they drove, or how this role in Shriners had affected them…There were tears.Tears of joy, compassion, empathy, gratitude, and love. The generous hospital drivers give so much of their time so freely to the patients and their fam-ilies throughout each year. It was heartwarming to see HOW very much their time with these families have given to each of them.In a world where neighbors arrive home in the evening and close their garage door, in a time where uncertainty is certain, and in this decade of “self” …. a Shriner’s light beams brightly against the darkness. As a Shriner’s Lady, I am blessed to sometimes just sit back and observe. I am able to see the devotion in the eyes of the men, the hope to help more patients, and the numerous ways the unique role of a Shriner have molded these men. There was a particular story the night of the event that I will treasure forever. It was Bud’s. 96 years old and as he told of his years driving, he choked up and took a moment. All of these years…. all of the patients…all of the miles….And he still carries each one with him, in his heart. Now, that’s the heart of a Shriner!Thank you, thank you, thank you … for everything each of you do! Page 20 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMSA2024Zor Shriners are hosts of the Midwest Shrine Association (MSA) Annual Summer Session August 7-10, 2024, in LaCrosse, WI. There will be many activities for Nobles and their Ladies to partic-ipate in. General planning for the event has been going on for the past four years and now it’s ‘crunch’ time with nal touches and details being worked out.Events will begin Wednesday evening with a “Welcome Party” dinner and entertainment at the La Crosse Center. Thursday there will be optional activities available during the day plus the usual Thursday evening parade in Onalaska followed by a Shrine Oasis at the Omni Center with food and entertainment. On Friday there will be unit and individual competitions in the morn-ing, Ladies Luncheon, and other optional activities available. Friday will conclude with Shrine-A-Rama at the LaCrosse Center in the evening including eats and entertainment. The session will conclude on Saturday morning with a Shrine Parade in La Cresent, MN and a Grab-n-Go snack. Zor Noble Joe Harker, PGM along with Deputy Director Generals Monte Steiber, PP and Todd Wohlert, have been busy identifying all the puzzle pieces and putting them together. We also have had many other Zor Shriners and Ladies involved in the preliminary planning and much progress has been made. A larger committee has met on several occasions to discuss the cur-rent planning for several of the events and activities. They have already put signicant time and energy into the planning but there is still a long way to go before we can say we are ‘Ready to Go’! We are extremely grateful for the work that continues to be done planning this event. There will be more and more information placed on the MSA 2024 Webpage as it becomes available. As we get closer and closer to the actual event it will be necessary to enlist the help of many Shriners and Ladies to help with the several events, activities, and other jobs that are part of this monumental occasion. On the Zor Website, under the heading of ‘MSA 2024’ there is an initial schedule of events, (which is still somewhat tentative and subject to change), listing the events and activities being planned. Look at this and see if there is something there that interests you in which you would be willing to help. If you have any ideas of something not listed, it may not be too late to possibly add an activity or event. Please let us know as soon as possible of your idea(s). A lot of help is going to be needed to successfully host this event so please let us know your willingness to help by contacting Joe at jbh2010PGM@outlook.com. Greetings Nobles and Ladies! As I am writing this article, the pa-rade season is over for us. When looking outside and traveling to the countryside, the farmers are in the fall harvest mode. They are reaping what they have sowed earlier in the year. Now is the time for us Shriners to reap our harvest. We have a Day of Light happening, so we will have new Masons to choose from to become Shriners. I encourage each one of you to go to your next lodge meeting and do your own harvesting by nding out who are not Shriners in your local lodge and ask them to see if they want to become a Shriner. Think back to when you joined, if it was this year or 55 years ago. Why did you join? What made you interested in Shriners? What did the fellow Mason say to you that made you want to join the Shrine? Now it’s your turn to do the same to that Master Mason sitting in your lodge or when you see him the next BARRY AUSEN, PAST POTENTATEZOR MEMBERSHIP 2023time. We have a Ceremonial coming up on December 2nd in La Crosse. We can make his dream come true by becoming a Shriner.Remember if you have not paid your dues yet, you need to before the end of the year. Your 2024 dues statement has been sent out and are to be paid by December 31st. When you go to the Annual meeting in January, you will have to have your dues paid to vote. Remember, if you don’t have your dues paid, you are not supposed to par-ticipate in your Shrine Club activities. If you think you are still going to be around for the next 18 years, you might want to think about paying your Perpet-ual Imperial Dues. You have until December 31st to have them paid. After the 1st of the year, they are going from $30 to $50 per year. You have a great option available to you to pay your per capita tax life purchase for $900 and must be paid by December 31, 2023. If you are interested in this, call the Zor ofce at 608-833-6343 Ext 1.

Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
