I am grateful to everyone who braved the weather to sup-port Lady Tammy and myself.I would like to thank our Installation team for everything they did to make it a successful event. Installing Potentate Barry Ausen PP, Installing Marshal Robert Hering, Installing Chaplain Rod Rommel. Along with our committee members Steve Peterson, PP, and his Lady Mary Ellen, Monte Steiber, PP, and his Lady Ann, Dale Brathol and his Lady Joan, and Ed Swenson and his Lady Julie. Our calendar is full of fun and fellowship in 2024: Clown Party, February 24 at the Esquire Club in Madison Feztastic Bowling, March 23 at Wagner’s Lanes in Eau Claire Easter Egg Hunt & Party, March 30 at the Tomah Masonic Lodge in Tomah Quarterly Meeting & Potentate Party on April 13 in Wausau Imperial Session July 1-5 in Reno NV Kwahamot ski show July 24 in Tomahawk MSA Summer Session Aug 7-10 in La Crosse Zor appreciation event on September 28 in Onalaska Fall Ceremonial Dec 7 in La CrosseIusiou SiROGER KELLERFrom the desk ofTo list only a few, there are several more club and unit events planned around Zorland that everyone is invited to and encouraged to at-tend. Keep a watchful eye on the Zephyr for these exciting events. With my theme for this year being ‘24k Care for Kids’, we welcomed Gioia Schutte as our 2024 Patient Ambassador. Gioia will be trav-eling with me around Zorland as much as she can. She will have an article in the Zephyr to keep us up to date with what she is doing in sports and school.Due to the unfortunate timing of a snowstorm, our entertainment had to be cancelled. I have plans to bring the show to you at an upcom-ing event. Make plans now to attend as many events as possible, as you never know what I have up my sleeve.‘24K Care for Kids

Each donation is run in the Zephyr for 12 consecutive months, the additions to the list from 12 months ago are dropped and the new ones for the current month are added. Holler if you still have questions.• Average age: At the end of 2023 we have 928 members. 31%, or 283, are 80 or over. The good news is that the number is down from 335 (34% of membership) at end of 2022. We only have 37 members under 40 years of age. The average age of our membership is 70 years of age. Those in attendance enjoyed the meals of spinach artichoke chicken or grilled pork chops. It was a festive night and all those in attendance had a lovely time. Election of the ofcers was done earlier this year at the Stag night meeting in September and the of-cial installation of ofcers happened at this December meeting. Newly elected president, Tyler shared some thoughts on the upcoming year and shared some upcoming dates to be aware of. Valentine’s Day Dinner will be February 9th, 2024 and St. Patrick’s Day Dinner will be held on March 15th. More details of these events will be communicated soon so please mark these dates on your calendar. Ill. Sir Al Brueggen gave his report on his and Lady Penny’s travels around Zorland remarking on all the fun that was had and how well they were treated by all.The elections being held, the new leader for Zor is Ill. Sir Roger Keller and 1st Lady Tammy. His Shriner Dad, Ill. Sir Chuck Miller, PP, nominated him for the position as Potentate, and a unanimous vote was cast. Sir Barry Ausen, PP was the Installing Ofcer, Noble Bob Hering was the Installing Marshall, Noble Rodney Rommel was the Installing Chaplain, thank you all for the wonderful job.Time for the Banquet. The St. Croix Valley Shrine Club was there in full force showing their support for the newly elected Potentate and did a wonderful job of decorating all the tables. Even though the snow chased away some of the Nobles, Ladies, Friends, and the Entertainment, the evening was still a lot of fun. After dinner, Ill. Sir Roger, introduced Zor’s Patient Ambassador, Gioia Schutte. She is a patient from the Shriners Children’s Twin Cities. Gioia is very much into sports and loves to play her violin. She will be traveling to many of Zor’s events with Ill. Sir Roger and Lady Tammy.Looking ahead at this year, not only will we be having our normal functions to attend, but this year Zor is also hosting the 2024 Midwest Shrine Association in Summer session in August. The onions were planted end of November if they keep on growing like they are they should be ready the last week of April rst week of May. They do have a new Agriculture Commissioner so they are not sure if he is going to follow the past regime or just say sell them when you want to. If that is the case then they might be ready before the last week of April. We will be keeping our price at $12.00 a bag. I will contact you by April 3rd for your order.Remember, this is an agricultural product so the avail-ability of the onions is all dependent on Mother Na-ture. Pre-selling onions is easy to do, you can put up a ier at a local business, hospitals, bus garages or lo-cal watering hole and they sell themselves. The ier is available on the website under Zor events then hit the Vidalia onion button or I can email or send you a ier if you would like one. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Al and Lady Penny Brueggen for the wonderful year they had. The good news for 2023 is we created 23 new Nobles and 2 afliations. Now for the bad news we had 6 deaths.37 Nobles suspended for nonpayment of dues, 5 drops and the Black Camel was not our friend this year. He rode off with 51 of our no-bles. The year ended with 918 nobles and as of today we have 181 nobles that have not paid their dues.If you were not able to attend the annual meeting, Roger has some great ideas for membership. He is trying to make us remember why we became Shriners. During the dinner I started thinking to myself how many people at the dinner I knew very well and how many not so well. We had about 110 nobles and ladies able to make din-ner even with the harsh weather conditions in Zor land. I would have to say, about 100 of them I knew very well. Then I started to think, how many of them I would have known if I was not a Mason or Shriner. Besides my wife, it would have been two. I talk to a lot of the nobles and ladies, sometimes more than my own family.Being a Mason and Shriner opens doors for you into the future. You never know when you will come across the next Noble or lady that will become your new best friend. We need to keep nding new Masons and Shri-ners to keep this happening for the future. We need to keep going to our lodges so we can keep them open and keep bringing in new Masons. With new Masons, we can make them Shriners and keep our great Fraternity going strong into the future. If you have any Masons that would like to become Shriners, I know Roger will be happy to hold a cold sand for anyone, anyplace, any time.

Page 20 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMidwest ShrineAssociation 2024This is Zor Shriner’s Big opportunity to host the 2024 Annual Midwest Shrine Association (MSA) Annual Summer Session August 7-10, 2024, in LaCrosse, WI. Zor last hosted MSA in 2007. So, we don’t get this opportunity very often, thus we want to show the rest of the MSA Temples an outstanding time. There will be many activities for Nobles and their Ladies to participate in. General planning for the event has been going on for the past four years and now it’s ‘crunch’ time with nal touches and details being worked out.A “Welcome Party” with entertainment at the La Crosse Center south ballroom will kick-off the session on Wednesday evening. Thursday there will be optional activities available during the day plus the usual Thursday evening parade in Onalaska followed by a Shrine Oasis at the Omni Center with a great buffet and Entertainment. Friday morning will be the usual competitions in the morning, Ladies Luncheon over the noon hour and other optional activities available. Friday will conclude with a great Shrine-A-Rama at the LaCrosse Center including buffet stations and featuring the Dweebs, “Americas Favorite Party Band” for entertainment. The Summer Session will conclude Saturday morning with a Shrine Parade in La Cresent, MN and a Grab-n-Go snack. Zor Nobles Gary Cuskey, PP, Joe Harker, Monte Steiber, PP, and Todd Wohlert have been busy identi-fying all the puzzle pieces and putting them together. Many other Zor Shriners and Ladies are in the planning and much progress has been made. Signicant time and energy have gone into planning but there is still a long way to go before we can say we are ‘All Set’! We are extremely grateful for the work that continues to be done planning this event. As we get closer and closer to the actual event it will be necessary to enlist the help of many Shriners, their Ladies and La Crosse area Masons to help with the several events, activities, and other jobs that will be a part of this undertaking. On the Zor Website, under the heading of ‘MSA 2024’ there is an initial schedule of events, (which is still somewhat tentative and subject to change), listing the events and activities being planned. Look at this and see if there is something there that interests you and which you would be willing to help. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland!The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine.For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. He knows that it is close to my heart, and I happen to serve it in a position that I enjoy. So here is the rst of many little articles on our order.I was honored to be asked, so rst…who am I? My name is Brenda Gaulke, I have been a member of Eastern Star since April 21, 1981. It has been a pleasure to serve my home chapter in River Falls where I serve in the “lifetime” station as Secretary. In my dual chapter in Clear Lake, I along with my husband serve as the Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron. Serving the state was a privilege that I had in 2018-2019 when I was the Worthy Grand Matron of Wisconsin and I’m still fullling state commitments today. Happy reading, this was fun putting this together for your enjoyment.What is the Order of The Eastern Star?Who are we?I’m sure that you have seen our Emblematic Star in your lodge room, and maybe you know what it represents or maybe not. Here is a brief explanation of who we are. The Order of Eastern Star is a fraternal orga-nization for both men and wom-en. It is based on a belief of a supreme being and ve heroines of the Bible. The star is having owers, colors and emblems that represent each of these ve women. Our top ofcer is a woman, who has a Mason at her left and together they are our leaders. This organization is open for membership to all Mason’s and the women in their families; wife, daughters, mothers, sisters, aunts, nieces…each one of you is eligible to join. Chapters are what we call each other at the local level, and we also have a state and international level. The purpose of our order is to provide welfare to the wives, widows, daughters, sisters and mothers of our Masonic Fraternity. We raise money for charities both within our organization and outside of it. We raise money for charities that support the care and living of our sisters and brothers. We raise money to enhance their living arrangements. We raise money for special projects; Ronald McDonald House, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Occu-Paws Dog Training, Vest-A-Dog, Pets for Vets, Improvement projects at Three Pillars including Riverside Lodge, the Patio area and currently for a Water feature for Alzheimer’s patients. Locally many chapters raise money for their communities Fire Departments, schools, Back Pack meal program, women’s shelters, food pantries and so much more. Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland!The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine.For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest.Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
