Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comHello Nobles and Ladies, Welcome to summer, hope you are all having fun and getting out to support our parade units. It is fun seeing the parade units out having fun.Tammy and I with the Patient Ambassador Gioia and her mom along few other Zor members attended the Twin Cities Gala in Minneap-olis. There were 400 registered guests and $ 458,313 was raised year during this exciting event. Since its inception, in 2016 a total of $2,558,944 has been raised for the Twin Cities Clinic!I had the honor of doing a couple more cold sands in June bringing in 2 more Nobles who are ready to get out and parade! If you know of anyone who is wanting to join the Shrine so they can parade with you let me know. I will happily do a cold sands. Those of us who attended Annual Communications at Grand Lodge in Madison had a great weekend. Congratulations to Tom Stevens our new Grand Master of WI. We also attended the Chicago Leadership Conference (formerly Divan Day) at the Chicago hospital with several Divan members. It was nice to get to see what they are doing there. Some of the upcoming events for July include a Hillbilly Reunion on July 20 in Tomah, make your reservations for this delightfully fun time with our cuzins. The Minicars will be having a picnic on July 21, and the Kwahamot ski show in Tomahawk on July 27. I think Gioia may be in attendance for the ski show. MSA is fast approaching, thank you to all that have already made their reservations. For those of you that haven’t, you don’t want to miss this fun lled event that we only get to host once every 15 years. Check the Zor website for the details of all of the different events that are being planned for you to do. There will be a sign up sheet for volunteers to help out. If you are able, please sign up to help where you can.Tammy and I are planning the Grill and Chill event in September as a way to say thank you to everyone for working so hard planning and putting together the MSA this year. This event is for ALL Nobles, Ladies and kids in Zorland. Details are in the Zephyr for hotel and dinner reservations. This dinner will be free to all who attend!Til next month,CARROT ON! Rocky Point Dr.Tampa, FL 33607SHRINERSCHILDRENS.ORG ACHIEVING HER DREAMS!For most teenagers being voted queen would be the memory they carry forward from senior prom. But Jennessa, 17, from eastern Iowa, will also remember her shoes thanks to care she received at Shriners Children’s Chicago. The teen was able to wear the cute sneakers she hoped for when a childhood orthopedic condition threatened her footwear goals.Pediatric orthopedic surgeons treated Jennessa for macrodactyly as a child, a condition where the toes and foot may develop bigger. In 2023, she returned to Shriners Children’s with a new goal, to wear sneakers at prom. Six months before the dance. Clark Schierle, M.D., Ph.D., used liposuction to remove extra tissue on her the foot. However, a rare infection put her fairy tale moment at risk. The team performed several procedures leading to successful skin graft. Jennessa was able to wear white sneakers to prom and was even crowned Prom Queen. “I remember receiving a text that night in April and seeing pictures from prom. I was sobbing in my kitchen tears of joy thinking this is why Shriners Children’s is amazing!” said Dr. Schierle.Shriners Children’s Chicago helps create real-life Cinderella story• Protect yourself from Phishing: • Use security software that can scan and detect fraudulent sources. • Use multi-factor authentication for your accounts. • Only respond to emails that you recognize the account. • Do not provide any sensitive information via email • Zor is the 63rd largest temple in membership. Page 8 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMidwest ShrineAssociation 2024Activities have been described in previous issues of the Zephyr. A Zor member and/or his Lady will be leading each of these activities. Zor needs your HELP!!! These team leaders need volunteers. We will need greeters at several hotels to welcome our guests and provide directions, attendant at registration, greeters at the dif-ferent events to take admissions, attendants at the Oasis to provide assistance, parade set-up workers and intersection attendants, and as yet to be determined workers for unknown support. See Zor’s MSA website https://zorshriners.com/msa-2024 Click on a link to see who the leader of that activity is and contact them to volunteer or https://forms.gle/iCoVLxUvtopc5def6 or contact Zor Nobles Joe Harker, Monte Steiber, or Todd Wohlert. We will also be reaching out to La Crosse area Lodges to request assistance from them.On the Zor Website, under the heading of ‘MSA 2024’ there is an initial schedule of events, listing the events and activities being planned. Look at this and see if there is an event or activity that interests you and which you would be willing to help. A lot of help is going to be needed to successfully host this event so please let us know of your willingness to help by contacting any of those named above or Joe at jbh2010PGM@outlook.com Thank you, Gary Cuskey, PP Joe Harker, PGMMSA President MSA 2024 Director GeneralZor Shriners are less than 45Days from hosting the GREAT “MSA 2024 Sum-mer Session” August 7th – 10th, in La Crosse and the surrounding area. It is our time to show the rest of MSA what GREAT Hosts we are! There will be a multitude of activities for all Nobles, Ladies, and families to enjoy. Now it’s ‘crunch’ time with nal touches and details being worked out. Midwest Shrine Association (MSA)ZOR MEMBER ATTENDANCEThis year a new online MSA registration system is being utilized. What that means is that each attending member must register online and then work through his unit leadership to obtain a hotel room reservation. Historically, Zor has refunded to the participating unit, half of the unit member’s registration fee and a mile-age allowance based upon the unit’s home base. Again this was historically done following the session. This year we will be making this registration adjustment at the time the member registers. This will be done by placing a “Coupon Code” in the appropriate eld near the end of the registration process. To register go to: https://zorshriners.com/msa-2024 Coupon Code: ZORNOBLE24Zor Shriners, for many years, has underwritten some of each unit member’s expenses to attend and participate in the Midwest Shrine Association‘s Summer Session. The way these expenses were credited to the mem-bers was through a hotel room cost adjustment before the session and a refund to the member’s unit following the session for those members who attended and participated.

Page 11July 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineGRAND MASTER NOTESTIN LIZZIES SHRINE UNITGreeting Zor Shriners!WI Freemasonry and the leadership team are very much looking forward to working with the Shrine in WI this year! Our strate-gic plan has set the course as we focus on education, improved member engagement, membership growth & retention, and building brotherly love through joint service projects.Shrine International’s cooperative efforts with Scottish Rite provided foundational structure for our own membership ef-forts here in WI. At the Shrine Membership Summit, I have seen rst-hand the dynamic leadership of your membership teams in action. We plan to work with Zor and the other WI Shrine temples to coordinate multiple joint Day of Light events across the state, leading up to the Spring Joint Ceremonial. Watch for more information as details, dates, & locations are locked in. I am excited to look for additional ways to collaborate and exchange ideas with other jurisdictions at the Grand Master’s Summit hosted by Shrine Imperial in Reno. Closer to home, I cannot wait to see our WI hospitality on full display at the Mid-west Shrine Association held in La Crosse this fall.Lastly, I want to thank you for your past time & nancial support of the WI membership program. Special shout-out to Br. Steve Livernash for his work on our committee the past few years. The program has led the way nationally, showing Freemasonry’s positive impact on our communities leading to thousands of membership inquiries. I would ask for your continued support to keep the positive energy and momentum going. Continued cooperation between our appendant bodies is the best path forward for WI Freema-sonry. Together we rise - let’s go forth and do our work as Shrine Masons!Sincerely & fraternally,Tom StevensGrand MasterGrand Lodge of F&AM of WisconsinTin Lizzies getting ready for the Durand Parade

Page 15July 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineUpon learning that I was Most Worshipful Grand Master Stevens top line signer for ZOR, Illustrious Sir Keller, Zor Potentate, requested that I present the ZOR Grand Masters Fez. In an effort to make a memorable day even more momentous, I excepted the wonderful honor of bestowing Grand Master Stevens with his Grand Master ‹24 Fez.I believe we as ZOR Shriners are thrilled to celebrate as another of our nobles reaches this pinnacle of Masonic achievement. The inseparable association between Shriners and Masonry lls me with pride. Moreover, the fact that so many of ZOR’s nobles have previously held, currently hold, or are ascending to the ofce of Grand Master for the State of Wisconsin solidies my belief that ZOR is an organization of the highest quality. It is composed of high achieving men who embody fun, fellowship, and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief, and truth.Thank you, Most Worshipful Past Grand Master Ritchie, for your exemplary leadership. Most Worshipful Grand Master Stevens, we look forward to working closely with you and celebrating your achievements in the coming year.

The activity of the day was a minia-ture golf contest at Walsh Golf Center near La Crosse, Wisconsin. Noble Jerry Larsen shot a low score and won the 50/50 competition. Af-ter golf the group retired to the Crooked Pint Ale in Onalaska for food and comradery. The next outing is the annual La Crosse Shrine Club Steak Fry at Jansky’s Eagle Nest in La Cres-cent Minnesota. After Jansky’s comes MSA in August. Also, there appeared to be enthusiasm for a future “round table” at Shogun Sushi and Hibachi in Onalaska.

July 2024 • Zor Zephyr Magazine Page 19GIOIA SCHUTTE UPDATEPATIENTPATIENT AMBASSADORAMBASSADOR Gioia SchutteGioia SchutteHello Shriners!! It is nally summer!! No more schoolwork or school and it feels absolutely great to sleep in. Even though sleeping in is around 8 o’clock for me, I just like staying up later which means I don’t have to get up in the morning. My track season has ended and my ending PR for shot put is 23’ 3 ¼”. Summer weight room and volleyball started the rst week in June and it has kept me busy, but I love it!! My volleyball season doesn’t ofcially start until August, so right now I just have open gyms for that, but it is a great way to practice skills before the tryout season starts.I recently started a job at Culver’s near my school and I already love it!! The work is not hard, just busy. I am also planning on going on a class trip to Europe next summer, so that is the main reason I got my job, but I am going to have to think of other ways to make money, so that’ll keep me busy. I have also gotten my driver’s permit, so I have started driving. No matter what my mom says, I’m an okay driver. I still need LOTS of practice though 😂. The last Shriners event that I went to was the Twin Cities Gala. It was my second year going and I loved it!! I sat with Roger and Tammy and Roger dumped his salad onto mine and kept asking the waiter for more ranch. I will have my revenge on Roger, but rst, we need to help Tammy reach her goal in order for it to happen. I’m sure most of you know, but if Tammy reaches her goal of selling $20,000 worth of rst aid kits, Roger will eat a full-sized carrot. If you ask me, that sounds like great entertainment! The next big Shriners event that I will be at is MSA. I’ve heard that it is a great event and a great way to spend part of the week, so if you are available August 7-10th, please come and represent Shriners!! I am also attending the Apostle Islands Camp Achieve with Maureen one last time. Maureen is a great person, and she has been helping kids like me for many years, being able to do things like kayaking, rock climbing, shing (which Roger still owes me a trip to the trout pond), horseback riding, and telling stories about her experiences at other camps seeing how happy other kids are spending time with kids like themselves. As Hollen and Ramona said in their speech, these are times that kids will never forget. I just wanted to say thanks here in the Zephyr to all of the people that have helped Maureen and thanks to Maureen herself for helping kids enjoy their time with others like themselves. This is all that I have, so come back next month for more updates!!

Some of our ladies even had a Shrine welcome at Boise airport. This was my first Supreme Session - what an inspiring experience! Almost 1000 ladies from 4 countries with 116 temples represented gathered for the purpose of this great philanthropy! All 3 Daughters of the Nile Wisconsin Temples had their Queen present. The power that women from all walks of life have when working together is nothing short of amazing. Daughters of the Nile presented Shrine International with a check for over $2 million dollars! And our Canadian friends gave over $366,000 to the Canadian hospitals. WOW!!!!! Canada has only 10 temples.During a lovely worship service in Boise, we were all given a puzzle piece. It struck me that each person that dedicates time and energy to helping our Shriners Children’s, is like a puzzle piece. Each piece is vital to what the whole picture looks like. All the pieces are different shapes and sizes and when put together, it’s beautiful! What could be more beautiful than supporting our Shriners Children’s!DAUGHTERS o e NILEThe inspiration and enthusiasm for Daughters of the Nile came home with me, I hope to spread the fire that was lit in my heart by raising the awareness of Daughters of the Nile as well as grow our membership for the sake of our Shriners children. This really is a special group of women! Please consider having your wife, daughter, mother, granddaughter or niece look into joining to work alongside the Shriners for our hospitals.Look for Antioch and our delicious baked goodies in our usual December lobby location of the Radisson during MSA, starting Thursday morning until we run out. Many of you have had a taste of the wonderful baked goods our ladies provide for the December cookie walk; we bring Cookie Walk Special Edition to MSA for your early morning treat with your coffee.Daughters of the Nile will also be hosting a golf outing, September 15, 2024, at Prairie Pines golf course in Sun Prairie. The entry forms as well as sponsorship forms are included in the Zephyr. Please consider helping our group by golfing or sponsoring the outing.See you all in LaCrosse! Quee Jen (Schaefe) Verni

Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
