Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comIusiou SiROGER KELLERFrom the desk ofOctober was another busy month. It started with the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club feeding the entire UW River Falls football team the week of their homecoming game. Then, there was the Potentates Dinner and Homecoming Parade, where Gioia stepped off the parade on a beautiful palomino horse. The next weekend was the Funsters Craft Show. If you have never been to this, you should make plans to attend next year. They have several vendor booths, rafe prizes, and entertainment throughout the weekend. The Shriners Clinic in the Twin Cities hosted a Trunk or Treat for the patients. I got together with my Osman and Zuhrah counterparts and handed out candy at this event. Seeing all the kids in their costumes was a lot of fun. It is always a joy to help out at the clinic with the events they host for the kids. As we are preparing for the last couple of months of 2024, I’d like to remind you that our fall Ceremonial is coming up on December 7th in La Crosse. During which is our parade to glory, as your clubs and units meet to decide where to allocate your donations, I’d like to suggest that you think about Zor’s general fund, the transportation fund, Shriners Children’s Twin Cities, and Lady Tammy’s project. If you are a van driver and have not gotten your annual driver’s certication into the ofce, please get this done as soon as possible so that you are covered on our insurance when you are transporting patients. A new policy is requiring all drivers to ll this out and turn it in.Around Zorland in November you will nd Feztival of Trees happening. There is one in Sparta and one in Wisconsin Rapids. The display of trees is beautiful and creative, you have a chance of winning one for your home.Til next month,CARROT ON!

Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.com By: Noble Brad AndrewOn September 27th, Zor Shriners came together for a well-deserved fun and relaxing weekend. Friday evening came fast for some and for others just in time to unwind. A Divan meeting started Friday evening, followed by a well-organized happy, fun, and laughter lled hospitality suite. We all came together and enjoyed each other’s company for a wonderful evening. The laughter continued throughout the evening. Hugs, smiles, kisses, stories and maybe a few tears showed up. Overall, a wonderful time was present for everyone. Just a small note. When I rst walked into the room, I noticed a Big Whirl-pool hot tub. What the heck was going on. We are all not going to t in that tub. Yet, no one has, or brought a swimsuit. This was going to be very interesting. I said to myself, “The camera is staying off”. After a few giggles and smiles among the crowd, the Illustrious Sir Roger Keller voice silenced the crowd. He wanted to thank everyone for a wonderful job at the Midwest Shrine Association (M.S.A.). The hard work that everyone put into making this the BEST that has been done. We set the BAR very high. It’s going to be very hard to beat this one!!! Throughout the early evening, many came up to the front of the group and voiced their feelings on how we ALL did a wonderful job in making M.S.A. a huge success. Everything seemed to fall into place where it should. There were no pieces missing in this puzzle. Lady Judy Cuskey received the Communication award on M.S.A. It was the “WOW” factor on what she did. Joe Harker made remarks about M.S.A., the vendors and the food. All being better and top notch. Can’t forget the event for the Ladies. BIG thanks to Noble’s Steve Livernash and Brian Dunham for all their long and sleepless days/nights working on that weekend. As Noble Steve once said “HIP, HIP, HORRAY. Everyone should be PROUD of what we all accomplished. Once all was said and done, the pizza arrived and lled our bellies. The pizza’s smelled wonderful, and everyone enjoyed eating, drinking and laughing and just being around the “BEST FAMILY” ANYONE COULD ASK FOR!! As the pizza drifted away, so did everyone else into the night. Not sure how long they lasted, but you can only guess. Sleep well everyone. Oh, just throwing this out there. I heard it through the grape vine that Ill. Sir Al Bruggen, PP, loves “Bugles”. Maybe it’s the crunchiness they make. The morning may have come early for some. Not much was happening until the evening. We all did our own stuff throughout the day. We were all looking forward to the evening activities. All day long, everyone kept themselves busy doing what they liked to do. The night was nally coming for our celebration to begin. The hallways were lling up with people.
Page 15November 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineSomething was strange! No one was dressed up. Was I missing something? Did I get the wrong message about tonight’s dress code? I ran back to the room and asked my wife about the dress code tonight. Worried, I would show up and look out of place. My wife looked at me and said “How the heck should I know what the dress code is tonight. Figure it out, she said. Then I remembered that it was a casual night. Time to sit back and relax. This night was about “FUN”!! As people were walking in the hallway, Brain Dunham walked by me and handed me a big heavy jack. I looked at him and wondered where in the world did you get this. Then I gured it’s better not to know. All I was asked to do is hand this to Roger, which he told me to give to his wife. So, I did. My hands are clean now. In time we all started to gather in the room for the evening activities. The tables were wonderfully decorated. A photo area was set up in the back for pictures. You could have your picture taken by a campre along with roasting marshmallows. A nice idea for the theme that was presented that evening. The start of the evening was by Ill. Sir Roger commenting on how GREAT of a job we all did at M.S.A., And tonight was our reward. Noble Brian Dunham gave the prayer, and we all said the pledge of allegiance. Dinner was nally served. As dinner ended, Ill. Sir Roger made introductions of his Divan and support staff. Other introductions of Past Masters, Hospital Board of Governors, and Past Potentates were made. A few very nice awards were handed out to a group of people who helped with M.S.A activities. The Divan had a VERY nice gift handed to them, a beautiful apron with the Zor emblem and Masonic emblem together. WE work together hand in hand. This is something not many will ever get. We are the BEST!! A “FAMILY” bond that will never be broken. Congratulations to all on the FABULOUS job!! But wait, the evening is not over. The “CRABGRASS” BAND is about to play. Finishing pictures of the band it was time to start the music. As the band was playing, some of our Shrine members got up on stage and did their best to sing along. It was nice to see that the band would interact with the crowd like it did. America’s Got Talent has nothing to worry about. All in all, we all had a wonderful time. Again, HIP, HIP, HORRAY, to the best organization in Shrinedom, ZOR!! Thank you, Ill. Sir Roger Keller, for everything you did! Also, a Big HORRAY to everyone else involved in making this happen. You are the BEST and we provide it!! Take care all, until we meet again.GRILLIN’ AND CHILLIN’

We kicked things off at the Amery Fall Festival Parade on September 14th, followed by the Spring Valley Dam Days Parade on September 15th. We wrapped it all up at the UW River Falls East-West parade on October 5th, coinciding with the homecoming game. It was a fantastic turnout, with many alumni and current students enjoying the festivities, including the Shriners’ parade.A standout moment was Steve Livernash’s incredible Steampunk entry, a dazzling assembly of engineered components that truly captivated the crowd. Alongside him, several clubs from both the Zor Shrine and Osman Shrine participated, making for a vibrant and memorable event. It truly took a village as the women pooled their resources, bringing along two fabric cutting boards, two ironing stations, ve sewing machines, and two drawstring insertion tools. Their teamwork was remarkable; in just ve hours, they crafted an impressive 120 sewn gift bags. The atmosphere was lled with camaraderie and laughter, and a light lunch helped the time y by even faster. Later this year, these bags will be lled with donated gifts for the much-anticipated Shriners Hospital gift giveaway, an event that brings joy to children of all ages. The impact of the Women’s Auxiliary’s efforts will undoubtedly bring many happy faces, showcasing the power of community and generosity. Their initiative is truly inspiring!Page 19ST CROIX VALLEY FOOTBALL FEEDShrine Women’s Auxiliary working hard.Zor’s Illustrious Sir Roger Keller lent a hand to insert drawstrings for some bags.On Wednesday, October 2, the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club hosted a supper for the UW River Falls football team at the American Legion in River Falls, WI. This year, they broke from tradition, serving a hearty meal of meatballs, seasoned mashed potatoes, gravy, dinner rolls, assorted cookies, and pumpkin bars.A dedicated team of ten Shriner volunteers worked diligently to prep the Legion Hall, prepare the meal, and serve approximately 120 players. Impressively, the entire team was served in just sixteen minutes! Coach and team members expressed their gratitude for the meal and praised the delicious food, truly enjoying the dining experience. Page 21November 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineGIOIA SCHUTTE UPDATEPage 21October 2024 • Zor Zephyr MagazineHello Shriners! It’s nally spooky season!!It has been about a month and life is still pretty busy. Work has denitely gotten busier, as well as all of my teachers giving me homework.I am still going to the weight room, and I am getting stronger by the day!! There’s not much new about that, it’s still my usual three days a week. My friends and I have fun, and we goof around a lot, but we also get in a good lift. Tryouts for club volleyball are on November 10th, I am hoping to get on a better team than I did last year!!As I said before, work is busy but going great!! They started to train me on drive-through and I already have gotten so many compliments on how great I am doing from both my managers and customers, and I can’t wait to start being trained on custard, even if I have to wait until I am 16 for that . As for Shriners events, I attended the East-West game on Saturday, October 5. Along with attending, I was also the parade marshal for the second year in a row. Instead of a convertible this year, a nice college student named Ashley let me ride on her horse, Squash. It was such a fun time, and I absolutely cannot thank the people who put that together for me enough, including Ashley and Squash. As the months y by, my time to be Zor Shriners Patient Ambassador is coming to a sad end, but we won’t think about that now, we still have plenty of time. This is a long overdue update, but as I mentioned in my last article, we had our Homecoming at the end of September, which is early and I already had to send in my Zephyr article for October, so I will be updating y’all in November, which is two months later . I took pictures with a group of friends and then we all went out to dinner at a pizza place together. I didn’t get pizza, but I got a big, delicious sandwich with in-house brined turkey, a little bit of vinaigrette, Swiss cheese, and some kale, along with some chips. Our group waited about an hour for our food while a larger group got all of their pizzas and food before we got ours and we showed up around 20 minutes earlier than them. We were all confused but had a great time eating food and dancing all night. That’s all that I have for this month folks!! I’ve got more updates with you in December!!

With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Page 24 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comHospital RepresentativeQueen Qiu (pronounced ‘Q’)QiuLian “Qiu” is 7 years old and a patient at Shriners Children’s Chicago. She lives in Neenah, Wisconsin. Qiu was born with a difference in her leg, she was missing the long bone called the Tibia. She came to Shriners Children’s at age 2. Her orthopedic surgeon performed a lower leg amputation to allow her to grow and move more easily. Qiu received a prosthetic leg from Shriners as well. Her mom, Amy, says the care at Shriners Children’s allows the second grader to do many things she loves, things she couldn’t do without her prosthesis. A “few” of her favorite activities include violin, basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball, swimming, archery, tumbling, dance, theater, and tennis. She has also completed 4 triathlons to date. “We love our visits to Shriners because it never feels like a “medical” appointment. It feels like going to visit family.”Qiu loves to travel. She has climbed the mountain at Machu Pichu, swam in the seas of the Caribbean, fed kangaroos in Australia, rode a camel in the Sahara Desert, cared for rescued animals in the Amazon jungle, and has done mission work in the Philippines. 2024 UW-WHITEWATER SHRINE GAME Photo on the right:Qiu ready to ‘re the cannon’ (which she did).
