Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.com“HELLO FROM TAMPA!!” is what I heard on the other end of the line. Many of you may not know that in early March each year to prepare our upcoming leaders we send your Oriental Guide and your Assistant Rabban to school in Tampa. These two classes, in my opinion, have been fundamental in the positioning of who we are as ZOR today. The questions and ideas that came back to ZOR with them this year were invigorating. There are several topics covered including budgeting, membership, marketing, event ideas, and strategic planning to name a few. Then there is the fellowship. At Oriental Guide School, it is the rst time you meet your counterparts. I remember walking into the ballroom and seeing all the Fez’s from all over the world, meeting the Nobles in the same position who had similar questions and different views. At Assistant Rabban School it is a rekindling of friendships, and a discussion of what progress has been made since you last saw each other. My takeaway from the two events is that despite some of the pains we experience as a large organization ZOR is one of the premier temples in the Shriners International organization. This year I understand we were able to give some guidance on strategic planning and what it looks like when implemented as we have just experienced the process rsthand. We have made more progress on the CRM (contact relationship management) program and plan to have it 100% operational shortly. You should note that all the communication that comes from ZOR will have a ZOR address ending in @zorshriners.com. Please note that if you receive ANY communication from a different address ALWAYS verify the message with a phone call. We are hopeful that this will help all of us avoid being a victim of fraud. We have committed to present an ofcer training session in January at the annual meeting in Stevens Point. I am sharing this information now, prior to parade season, so your club/unit can budget to send members of your leadership team to attend. I would encourage your club/unit to cover the cost of the event and hotel for the attending members. ZOR has taken on the burden of insurance for each club/unit so we are hopeful that there will be room in your budget to send your leaders. We are one of the few temples in the MSA that does not have ofcer training annually for this purpose. We are intending to make this an annual event. There will be more information to follow in the third quarter this year.Another month, another Cold Sands. Please let me know if we can perform a Cold Sands for your club/unit. We are happy to travel. The Spring ceremonial will be upon us shortly and we are excited to have candidates experience this event. Whether you have been to a ceremony recently or not this is a whole new twist. The format has been modied to accommodate all 3 temples in the state. Please come and support our Nobles and welcome our new Nobles. To register please go to https://zorshriners.com/joint-spring-ceremonial.Our quarterly meeting in Wausau is April 12th. This event is always a great time! The quarterly meeting is an opportunity to get together and have input on the direction of ZOR. Prior to our meeting, we will have a Cold Sands. Bring your candidates!! This is THE place to get your geraniums for the year.As I continue to travel this year I look forward to meeting/seeing you and learning about what’s happening in your neck of the woods. See you soon.Fraternally Yours,Brian Dunham, Potentate 2025Iusiou SiBRIAN DUNHAMFrom the desk of

Regina Fisher will be our new leader; her ofcial installation is April 19th. She’ll do SO GREAT!As I conducted my last Stated Session, emotions caught me off guard a bit. The year as Queen passed so quickly! It was an amazing experience.A look back at the parades I rode in, the dinners and ceremonials I attended, the blossoming friendships, and SO MANY LAUGHS makes my heart so happy. As a recent empty nester, I wondered what I would do with my time after so much investment in my children. My oldest started kindergarten in 1997 and my youngest just graduated in 2022. Those years and years and years of public-school events, concerts, sporting events, teacher conferences, calls, emails, etc. lled many many hours.Little did I know how much Daughters of the Nile and supporting Shriners Children’s would ll the void of not being needed on a daily basis as a mom.Over and over, I hear Imperial Lady Mandii Sturlaugson’s talk during the ladies’ luncheon in Eau Claire about having a daughter become a Shriners Children’s patient 3 times! The story of her young daughter being able to get the several back braces she needed as a growing girl through our hospital has stuck with me. It makes me proud to think that our efforts and time could be a drop in the bucket of her care. Continuing our work together for our kids is such an important mission! And the fun we have along the way is a huge bonus.Thank you all for your support and kindness this last year. I look forward to seeing you all at Shrine events soon.Nile Love,Past Queen Jenn Schaefer VernigQuee Jen (Schaefe) Vernig

Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comOn Saturday, March 22, the Zor Funsters and the Zor Mistz ventured out to New Dublin (New London, WI) to help them celebrate their annual St. Patty’s Day parade. As always, there was a huge crowd to entertain, and entertained they were. Although the sun shined brightly, the temperature was still only 30° outside, just a little chilly for parade day, but the spectators didn’t seem to mind at all. This is the rst parade of the year for the Zor Funsters which helps get us ready for the busy season ahead. By Noble Chris PetersZOR’S PARADE SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED
Page 15April 2025 • Zor Zephyr MagazineThe Funsters have about 18 parades scheduled each year, having a lot of fun making kids of all ages smile and laugh. Receiving the high ves, hugs, handshakes and the occasional picture taken makes it all worthwhile. The Zor Funsters have been putting smiles on crowd’s faces for over three quarters of a century. Back in the day the unit was so big they had to start a waiting list to join. Although the membership is down, we still maintain about 15 members and have expanded from just clowns to some superheroes like Batman. We also have some motorized vehicles like a 1902 Flint (horseless carriage), scooter, go-cart, garden tractor, and a segway chariot.Remember, we are only one of the many parades units that are part of Zor Shriners. Come out for a day of smiles and enjoyment and support your favorite parade unit.ZOR’S PARADE SEASON HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED
Page 16 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMIDWEST SHRINE ASSOCIATIONMidwest Shrine Association MSA 2025 Summer Session Wa Wa Shriners to host MSA 2025 Summer SessionMoose Jaw, SK, Canada August 20-23, 2025. Greetings Zor Noble, Ladies, and Families! Start making plans to attend this family orientated event. Illustrious Sir Brian Dunham and Lady Linda are hoping that Zor will travel to Moose Jaw and support Wa Wa like they supported us last year. Traveling to Canada will require a passport and if you or anyone travelling with has had a felony in your lifetime you must start now to get clearance to enter Canada. We know that we will not have the attendance that we had last year so we have asked that 25 rooms be set aside for Zor. We have been informed that online registration will open March 15. I would like to take a straw poll to get an idea of Zor’s interest in attending this year. Please e-mail Joe Harker at jbh2010PGM@outlook.com as soon as possible if you are probable or 50/50 to attend. More information can be found on the website: https://msa2025.com/ or follow this link: MSA 2025. On this website is a Travel Checklist that outlines key considerations for travelers from the US into Canada.

Page 18 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comMEET YOUR DIVANBy: Noble Brad SchultzWhen I was young, I always admired the picture of my Great-Grandfather that hung on the wall at my grandmother’s house. At the time, I didn’t fully understand what it represented, but I was drawn to it. The image depicted a man standing in an unfamiliar uniform, wearing a distinctive hat, and holding a sword, which was also mounted on the wall next to the picture. Growing up, I always wanted to have my photograph taken standing next to that picture and sword. When my grandmother passed away, I inherited both the picture and the sword, and I now display them in a place of honor in my home. One day, after some internet research, I suspected that the picture might be connected to the Masons.Intrigued, I took the picture off the wall and brought it to the Masonic Temple down the street on a meeting night. When the door opened, I held out the picture and asked if it was Masonic. To my surprise, I was invited into the Lodge that evening, where several members explained the signicance of the uniform and its connection to Masonry. That moment marked the beginning of my Masonic journey.Becoming a Mason has allowed me to feel a deep connection to my Great-Grandfather, even though I never had the chance to meet him. In 2011, I joined Zor Shrine and since then, I’ve had the honor of serving as a Past Master of my lodge, participating in Mini Cars, and holding roles such as Past President and current secretary of the Sahara Club.I am currently the First Ceremonial Master on the Zor Divan. My experiences in Masonry and the Shrine have profoundly shaped who I am today. In my spare time, I cherish moments with my Lady Michelle and our Great Dane, Winston. We enjoy outdoor activities like camping and hiking. I also have a passion for bourbon tasting and cigars, which add a relaxing touch to my life.

Page 20 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comST. CROIX VALLEY SHRINE CLUBBy: Noble Todd WohlertLittle piece of Shriner and Masonic history. Once upon a time the Zor Firehouse Jesters Clown Unit had a traveling MM degree team, fully sanctioned by the Grand Lodge. They raised brothers from 1976 to 2001. There was no clowning around here. They had a uniform of a bright green jacket that they all used to wear. The tarp that they used in the degree has the name of every single Master Mason that they raised in this time period - 117 of them! The tarp was recently found in storage at the La Crosse Masonic center. Here, it is laid out here on a table to get a little fresh air.FIREHOUSE JESTERSValentines Party By Noble Merl SteffenOn Friday, February 7th, the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club kicked off 2025 with a fun-lled Valentine’s Day party at the Hancock Lodge #229 Masonic Center in Ellsworth, WI. Club President Barry Ausen hosted the lively event, which saw many past potentates in attendance. One of the highlights of the evening was a photo-sharing activity, where members brought in old pictures of themselves, and everyone took turns guessing who-was-who. The meal, catered by Ptacek’s IGA, included a delicious spread of roast beef, ham, red potatoes, green beans, dinner rolls, and cupcakes.Entertainment was provided by Doug and Cheryl Hoffman, who added to the festive atmosphere. Bingo was a hit throughout the evening, with additional prizes awarded not only for regular bingo but also for certain callouts of the bingo balls. The crowd stayed engaged and entertained, having to yell out specic phrases when select bingo balls were called. The evening was lled with laughter, fun, and camaraderie, and many guests left with big smiles after an enjoyable celebration.

Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons. Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Email Dale Holmen at: holmendd13@a.net or call 608-241-4751.
