Page 2 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comHello. My name is Brian, and I became… a clown. On Saturday, February 15th, my life was forever changed. The Madison Clowns held their annual Clown Party, which this year many of the Divan members nicknamed “Larry’s Revenge Party.” For those who don’t know, Larry Hanson and I have had years of give-and-take ribbing each other (since I am telling the story it’s MOSTLY LARRY PICKING ON ME). When I started defending myself against Larry, it didn’t occur to me that he would be the individual who would be in charge of the clown conversion. Well, as fate would have it he was. Through NO FAULT of my own, my new persona is known as Mr. Cold Well (both my wife and I are REALTORS and we have been with Coldwell Banker for most of our 20+ year career). Thank you to the Madison Clowns, Dale and Deb Holmen, and Larry and Butterngers (Jill) Hanson for a wonderful evening that most had been waiting for.At the beginning of the month, a majority of the Divan and Support Staff made the annual pilgrimage to attend the Green County Shrine Club Pancake Breakfast in Monroe. Once again it was an extremely successful event. Through their hard work, they were able to send a sizable donation to the hospital system. A HUGE thank you to the Green County Shrine Club for this annual event!! For the second year in a row, we had Cold Sands there. Our Cold Sands team gathered again prior to our most recent Divan meeting and helped another nd his way through the desert to join our caravan. If you see either of our newest Nobles, Gene Baker or Rob Sharpe, please give them a warm welcome. The ZOR Cold Sands team is willing to travel. Let me know when a new candidate is ready, and we can make it happen. The joint ceremony on May 17th in Stevens Point will be a wonderful time for the new Nobles to complete their journey into ZOR.Linda and I, along with many of our counterparts, attended the Zuhrah Potentate Ball and were present at their ceremonial that morning. They had 9 come through with 7 of them attending the ball. The total ball attendance was just shy of 200. It was a wonderful time, and I was glad I could represent ZOR. One of the opening skits required the attendees to hold up a cardboard cutout of Illustrious Sir Clif Bailey, Zuhrah’s Potentate. “Clif” now travels with me. I have some great photos with “Clif” and will take MANY more with him throughout the year. The St Croix Valley Shrine Club had their Valentine’s Dinner. We had a wonderful meal, I lost at BINGO repeatedly, and we saw several “Valentine” pictures of the SCVSC members. One picture I especially enjoyed was of our P.P. Ill Sir Riemenschneider looking like a 1980s 007 secret agent. Illustrious Sir Gary Cuskey represented us at MSA in Moose Jaw. It was his last ofcial act as the President of MSA. While there he presented the new MSA website created by the Imagineers. ZOR will be managing the MSA site for the foreseeable future. Illustrious Sir Gary, THANK YOU for your hard work and the wonderful job you did representing ZOR for the last 5 years at MSA. I have not been told otherwise, so I believe ZOR has remained UNDEFEATED in the boat races. We have made signicant progress in rolling out our CRM (Contact Relationship Management) software. We still have a way to go but are through the creation process and are on to the testing process. This software will allow a more connected way of communicating with our nobles, and to/from our clubs and units. It will also allow for easier marketing of our events across our large footprint. As the development nishes, we will be offering training sessions on its use, showcasing how it will benet all of us into the future. As I continue to travel this year I look forward to meeting/seeing you and learning about what’s happening in your neck of the woods. See you soon.Fraternally Yours,Brian Dunham, Potentate 2025Iusiou SiBRIAN DUNHAMFrom the desk of

Page 12 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comJen (Schaefe) Verni, QueeJen (Schaefe) Verni, QueeQueen of Antioch Temple No. 113Daughters of the Nile, Madison, WIDAUGHTERS oe NILEGreetings Zorland,As we usher March in, hopefully some of the brutal Wisconsin reality of February is behind us.Antioch planned an exciting day for February 15th in conjunction with the Madison Clown party to initiate 4 new members into our Order.A mix of cold, snow and wind worked to foil Zor/Antioch plans, but our members braved the elements, and a lovely installation was held. The weather did present safety issues, and some Antioch members were not able to attend. In true Antioch form, the members worked together to ll holes in key roles to pull together a great ceremonial. It’s an honor to welcome Tammy Keller, Becky Ausen, Char Mayry and Andrea Fonseca as the newest members of Daughters of the Nile!Reading the lessons taught within to our new members, I was reminded of the basis of our Order. Faith, Hope, Charity, Trust and Harmony. And that Daughters of the Nile was established for women to associate together who might wish to better humanity. As Queen, I can say with certainty, Antioch is lled with women who do make humanity better! And our 4 new princesses will surely be great additions to our Order. As with Zor, Antioch encompasses a large geographical area of Wisconsin. I’m thrilled that the Supreme Temple, Daughters of the Nile, voted in June of 2024 to allow for electronic Sessions, to make it more reasonable for our members across the state to join in our monthly meetings. Also, as with Shrine, Daughters of the Nile does encourage members to form Clubs in the outlying areas. The presence of Clubs helps encourage local participation, widens our presence and welcomes fundraising ideas for their local communities.Daughters of the Nile calendar is a bit behind the Shrine, Antioch will have elections for the coming year’s ofcers in March. We hope to be able to ll our ofcer chairs and continue the wonderful work of supporting our Shriner’s Children’s with dedicated women. Here’s to better weather soon.Nile Love,Quee Jen (Schaefe) Vernig

Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comIt was a fun lled evening for all with good fellowship with old and new friends. There was great food for all that only the Esquire club could provide. There were the traditional events during the evening with the Red Shelton tribute to the ag and the Prayer of a Clown which our new Potentate, Ill. Sir Brian Dunham, received a framed copy. We held our usual door prize bag rafe with 100% of the money going to the International Clown Red Sneaker Fund for the burn research. This year we received $460.00 so thank you to all who helped with our cause. To date from this Clown {arty we have turned over $15,000.00 and we all thank you.As in all Zor parties one must introduce the past potentates present. We always request that they bring along the picture from there year. This year they had to walk the runway showing off their picture and introduce who was willing to attend with them. Since this was a beauty contest, we had to do some judging, and it was decided there was not a beauty to be had so no winner this time.Oh yes there was one thing that evening. We put our new Potentate, front and center, and made up as a clown and then dressed him up as such. This is always, for both, the most fun as well as the most work but our make-up artist Past Potentate and clown member did it again. Sorry Larry, you did not have much to work with, that was for sure. In the end Zor had its newest clown, named Mr. Cold Well.2025 POTENTATE PARTYThere is a new clown in town.On Saturday, Feb 15th, at the Esquire club in Madison, the annual Madison clown / Potentate party was held.

That being said, I want to thank my brother Nobles for placing your trust and condence in me to represent our Temple on the MSA Executive Committee over the past ve (5) years. This experience has been quite challenging as well as very enlightening and rewarding. I have been privileged and honored to meet and work with many Shriners from around our 15-temple association, as well as several Imperial Ofcers, Imperial Trustees, and a whole host of other individuals throughout this incredible journey. In late February, I attended the 2025 MSA Winter Session in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where the temperature was -30*F when I arrived. During the proceedings I passed the gavel on to Brother Robert (Bob) Keep of WaWa Shriners who was elected and installed as the MSA President for 2025. WaWa Shriners will be hosting the 2025 MSA Summer Session in Moose Jaw this August from the 20th through the 23rd. They have been working diligently to produce a quality session, and I encourage all to make the journey and enjoy their historic part of the world and warm Canadian hospitality. Check out the MSA website. While I was in Moose Jaw, I visited with many Nobles from around our association that attended our Summer Session in La Crosse, and I heard nothing but good remarks. I heard things like: ‘You guys knocked it out of the park’, ‘It was very well organized’, ‘Great communications, like an email every morning explaining the day’s activities and announcements’, ‘The food was good’, ‘Lots of things to do and to choose from’, ‘We had fun and a great time’. Believe me, this list goes on and on. The bottom line is Zor Shriners did a great job of organizing and producing a great MSA Summer Session in 2024. This is a great credit to Zor Shriners and Zor Ladies who worked tirelessly to produce a wonderful and quality event. Thank you all!I want to thank the Zor Imagineers for updating and taking over the role of ‘Webmaster’ for the MSA website. It was brought on-line just prior to the 2025 winter session, and I think it really looks good. You guys do an incredible job. ‘Imagine That’! Again, I want to thank everyone for their ne efforts to make our Summer Session such a huge success. Also, a very special ‘Thank You’ to Joe Harker, PGM for his great leadership as Director General of MSA 2024, and to Ill. Sir Monte Steiber, Deputy Director General and Noble Todd Wholert, Assistant Director General. In addition, Ill. Sir Roger Keller, 2024 Potentate, who added a great deal to the MSA summer session and a great shrine year in 2024. I am humbled and honored to have been able to represent our Zor Shrine Family throughout these past ve (5) years on the Midwest Shrine Association Executive Committee. After having the honor of serving as Potentate in 2023, I have now accepted the challenge of overseeing our membership efforts. As we all know, membership is an ongoing challenge, and retention can often be just as difcult. Our goal for 2025 is to build a strong membership team focused on both recruitment and mentoring. This year, we are planning to recruit not only through our lodges but also by reaching out to the general public. Many of you have experienced the cycle of bringing in a new member, only to see their enthusiasm fade after a year or two. When recruiting, it’s important to be honest with candidates about what they can expect and to understand what they’re seeking. Not every new member is looking for social events or to be part of a parade. Some of our most successful clubs are centered around social activities, but we must offer more, especially for the candidate’s family. This could mean creating events or offering activities that cater to the needs of their partner and children. One initiative from the Potentate is that we’d like every club and unit to host at least one public event in 2025 that’s open to the general public. While it’s wonderful to have private parties and celebrations, we need events where we can actively recruit new members. Additionally, the Potentate would like to encourage all Nobles to wear their Fez at these events. It’s an easy way to spark curiosity and conversations that could lead to membership interest. To support our outreach efforts, Zor has purchased roll-up banners that clubs and units can use at public events such as meat rafes, bingo nights, pancake breakfasts, canoe trips, skiing outings or anything else imaginal. These banners are affordable and customizable, allowing each club or unit to purchase and personalize them with their own photos and branding. If you choose to customize your banner, please have your Divan representative review the wording before it goes to print to ensure consistency and alignment with our overall messaging. For more information contact myself at 608-487-1692 or al.brueggen@zorshriners.comThank you for your ongoing commitment to the growth and success of Zor. Together, we can make 2025 a year of strong recruitment and lasting relationships.Fraternally, Alan Brueggen PP Membership Chairman, Zor Shrine

Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons. Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Email Dale Holmen at: holmendd13@a.net or call 608-241-4751.
