It’s funny how a trip to the hills of Ten-nessee has a way of relaxing your vocabulary. Well, fresh off the Potentate Trip to Louisville, KY, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN was a great time to reminisce with old and new acquaintances. The trip started on Oct 7th and 8th in Louisville with a day spent at the home of the Kentucky Derby (Church Hill Downs). What an awesome place to tour and just feel the excitement in the air from the many travelers that stop there daily. The tour allowed us to live and feel how everyday life is on the grounds, from prepping for a race to actually feeling the excitement the participants experience. Unfortunately, no races were held the day of our visit, but the bus group did learn a little about betting and was able to do a little wagering on some staged races which turned out to be very educa-tional and fun.Monday we were off to Pigeon Forge to get checked in to our hotel for the next few days as we would enjoy some shows and sightseeing. A guided trip to the Great Smoking Mountains was very breath taking and informa-tive. Dinner shows also added some excitement to our evenings. During our stay in Pigeon Forge, we also visited Dollywood Theme Park and “The Island” which provided the ladies with plenty of shopping opportunities. Many of our travelers during unscheduled times ventured off to Gatlinburg, the “Old Mill” area, some shopping, relaxing and even some zip lining and horseback riding. On day 6 we departed Pigeon Forge and traveled to Williamstown, KY to take on the Ark Encounter. The Ark Encounter is a Christian young Earth creationist theme park that opened in 2016. The centerpiece of the park is a large representation of Noah’s Ark, based on the Genesis ood narrative contained in the Bible. It is 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high. The self-guided walking tour of this was absolutely amazing and a must see for all.On day 7, our 47 weary travelers made their way back to Wisconsin after an amazing week with friends and an un-believable experience. Many “THANKS” go out to Larry Hanson and Joe Harker for their time, effort and planning to make this a memorable trip for all who were able to go.The month of September brought us the little East West Shrine game in River Falls. This was a very nice event and had a great attendance. The evening dinner was wonder-ful, and the guest speakers did a great job. The Saturday parade was well attended by the local Shrine Clubs as well as many from the Minnesota Shrine Clubs. Thank you, St. Croix Valley Shrine Club for holding this event annually and spotlighting Shriners Children’s -Twin Cities Ambulatory Care Clinic and bringing awareness to the local community of River Falls and the surrounding areas. Our Denim and Diamonds Appreciation Event was held at The Lodge Hotel in Mauston on September 23rd. This event was held to honor the Hospital drivers and their rid-ers for all their laborious time they put into coordinating and transporting patients to and from their appointments to Shriners Children’s in Woodbury, MN, or Shriners Children’s-Chicago. Early mornings, long days and late nights is what many of our driver’s experience. We are very proud of this group and want to thank everyone for coming. For those of you that couldn’t make it to the event “Thank You” for what you do. A very special “Thank you” goes out to Steve and Koral Livernash along with Ron and Dawn Malcolm for all your hard work and effort you put in to pulling off this event.Be Humble and Kind! Page 14 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comDENIM & DIAMONDS GALABy: Mary Ellen PetersonOn September 23, Zor’s 2023 Potentate Illustrious Sir Al Brueggen and Lady Penny, along with their committee for the event, hosted a Denim & Diamonds Gala which provided an enjoyable evening for Nobles and Ladies to come togeth-er to socialize, enjoy a great meal, recognize our Hospital drivers and dance the night away.Nobles were dressed in their best blue jeans and jean jackets while the ladies dressed in denim skirts adorned with their favorite diamonds enjoying a fun lled relaxing evening. Each Hospital driver was recognized and were able to share their favorite/most memorable story of a Shrine patient. All the stories were from the heart and very touching, ranging from newborn babies to young adults. There were not too many dry eyes while listening to the driver’s stories.Bob Hering, Zor’s Twin Cities Board of Governors, also thanked the drivers and shared that Zor transports the most patients to our Woodbury Clinic. He mentioned there have been days when you can see as many as four Zor drivers in the Drivers Lounge at the Clinic. Bob Hering was also ac-knowledged for his dedication and commitment to support-ing our Hospital drivers. Steve Livernash shared a video on “The Day of a Hospital Driver”. The video starts with the driver’s alarm going off at 4:45 a.m. so he can leave the house early in the morning and arriving back home late in the evening. Many are driving 300-600 miles a day through beautiful countryside to pro-vide transportation for a Shrine patient. The Leather and Lace band entertained the group with some good ole time country music, with many familiar songs to keep people on the dance oor.Thank you, drivers, for your commitment and dedication to provide transportation, so Shriners Children’s can provide the best care for our pa-tients with a better qual-ity of life.A special “Thank You” to Koral and Steve Liv-ernash, Dawn, and Ron Malcolm, along with Ill Sir Al and Lady Penny for a fun lled evening to honor our Hospital drivers. A great evening was had by all.
Page 15November 2023 • Zor Zephyr MagazineBy: Brad AndrewsOn September 23 an enthusiastic group gathered at The Lodge in Mauston. The Ladies all looked beautiful in their nery of Den-im and Diamonds, however it wasn’t the nery of the Denim and Diamonds that the evening was about, as the gathering was held to honor and recognize the Hospital drivers. These individuals take “our” kids to their appointments at the Shrine Clinics for treatment. The lovely Dawn Malcolm and Koral Livernash greet-ed us as we entered the venue with a nice little treat. We were gifted with a glass, a buddy bottle of wine and chocolate for the ladies and a buddy bottle of brandy decorated with a mustache and top hat. After an oasis everyone took their seats and were ready for the fun to start! Ron Malcolm opened with remarks of the evening. The prayer was delivered by Brian Dunham followed by a tasty buffet dinner. As dinner was winding down Illustrious Sir Al Brueggen made a few comments, recognizing attending VIPS and Divian mem-bers. Ron Malcolm introduced the night’s honored guests, hospital drivers Steve Peterson, Al Cornen, Mark Jerdee, Jim DeVoe, Schelley Schoville, Monte Kramer, Sean Schilling, Bruce Fransway and Bub Severson. A great big “Thank You” to you all! Just a note, Bub Severson is 96 years old!Emcee Ron Macolm spoke about the “Hospital Dads” and their dedication to the kids. Bob Hering gave insight about Shriners Children’s Twin Cities and all of the name changes through the years and how it has moved to a new and better location and the hard work to make this all possible to serve the kids. Steve Livernash produced a wonderful video on “A Day of a Hospital Driver” from picking up a patient at their home, the time and dedication of the driver returning home in the evening. The video presented a typical long and full day for the drivers. Potentate Al Brueggen and Divan closed the program with a birthday song to three special ladies. We then welcomed the band “Leather and Lace” as the enter-tainment. The crowd enjoyed the music and showed their appre-ciation by dancing throughout the evening. The two songs that really got things going were the Chicken Dance and the Hokey Pokey. Chuck and Cheryl Porter were celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary and were circled by those doing the chicken dance, showing the excitement of the 35th anniversary celebration. Congratulations to you both. There was a pair of diamond earrings that had been donated and were rafed. The beautiful pair valued at $3,000, and all were in it to win it! Was Marilyn Monroe right when she sang “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend”? Laura Bushen was the winner. A total of$1,480 was raised with the proceeds going to the Zor Trans-portation Fund.DENIM & DIAMONDS GALA

Page 20 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comThe clock is ticking! And before we know it August 7th will be here! The 7th is our “Welcome Party” aka kick off day for the ‘2024 Summer Session’ as Zor Shriners are the hosts. General planning for the event has been going on for the past four years but now it’s ‘crunch’ time, and the nal touches and details need to t into place. Our Director General, PGM Joe Harker, along with Deputy Director Generals, Monte Steiber, PP and Noble Todd Wohlert, have been busy identifying all the puzzle pieces and putting them together. We also have had many other Zor Shriners and Ladies involved in the preliminary planning and much progress has been made. But as we race closer and closer to the actual event it will be necessary to enlist the help of many Shriners and Ladies to help with the several events, activities, and other jobs that are part of this monumental occasion. On the Zor Website under the heading of ‘MSA 2024’ you will see an initial schedule of events, (which is still somewhat tentative and subject to change), listing the events and activities being planned. Look at this and see if there is something here that interests you in which you would be willing to help. If you have any ideas of something not listed, it may not be too late to possibly add an activity or event. Please let us know as soon as possible of your idea(s). A lot of help is going to be needed to successfully host this event so please let us know your willingness to help by contacting Joe at jbh2010PGM@outlook.com. At the recent Denim and Diamonds event in Mauston the larger committee met on Sunday morning and discussed the current planning stage for several of the events and activities. It is clear that several Shriners and their Ladies have already put signicant time and energy into the planning but there is still a long way to go before we can say we are ‘Ready to Go’! We are extremely grateful for the work that continues to be done planning this event. There will be more and more information placed on the MSA 2024 Web Page as it becomes available. Make your plans now to attend and be a part of this most important historic undertaking. Thank you.Gary Cuskey, PPMSA 1st Vice PresidentZor MSA RepresentativeMSA2024

Rocky Point Dr.Tampa, FL 33607SHRINERSCHILDRENS.ORG A MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMFor a child with a cleft diagnosis, the medical journey can span their entire childhood. The multidisciplinary team at Shriners Children’s Chicago guides families in the timing of procedures and surgical approaches to improve their child’s physical health – eating, hearing, breathing and speaking – while also creating the best possible appearance. While nearly all children who have a cleft will need braces (orthodontia), a smaller percentage also need teeth repair or replacement. David Reisberg, DDS, at Shriners Children’s Chicago, is one of a few hundred specially trained prosthodontists in the country. “If there’s a cleft lip involved, patients are usually missing at least one tooth in the cleft site, sometimes more. And if it’s a bilateral, they may be missing one on each side,” said Reisberg. Cleft lip and palate treatment journey has many experts who help along the wayWe’re here to provide the most AMAZING CARE anywhere for every child with orthopedic needs! Greetings Nobles and Ladies! As I am writing this article, the pa-rade season is over for us. When looking outside and traveling to the countryside, the farmers are in the fall harvest mode. They are reaping what they have sowed earlier in the year. Now is the time for us Shriners to reap our harvest. We have a Day of Light happening, so we will have new Masons to choose from to become Shriners. I encourage each one of you to go to your next lodge meeting and do your own harvesting by nding out who are not Shriners in your local lodge and ask them to see if they want to become a Shriner. Think back to when you joined, if it was this year or 55 years ago. Why did you join? What made you interested in Shriners? What did the fellow Mason say to you that made you want to join the Shrine? Now it’s your turn to do the same to that Master Mason sitting in your lodge or when you see him the next BARRY AUSEN, PAST POTENTATEZOR MEMBERSHIP 2023time. We have a Ceremonial coming up on December 2nd in La Crosse. We can make his dream come true by becoming a Shriner.Remember if you have not paid your dues yet, you need to before the end of the year. Your 2024 dues statement has been sent out and are to be paid by December 31st. When you go to the Annual meeting in January, you will have to have your dues paid to vote. Remember, if you don’t have your dues paid, you are not supposed to par-ticipate in your Shrine Club activities. If you think you are still going to be around for the next 18 years, you might want to think about paying your Perpet-ual Imperial Dues. You have until December 31st to have them paid. After the 1st of the year, they are going from $30 to $50 per year. You have a great option available to you to pay your per capita tax life purchase for $900 and must be paid by December 31, 2023. If you are interested in this, call the Zor ofce at 608-833-6343 Ext 1.

This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. Page 24 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comZOR SHRINE CLUBS AND UNITSI want to give a big Thank You for the following Clubs and Units who responded to the email letter that I sent out in early September to the leaders of our respective clubs and Units that supported the 2023 Sportsman’s Banquet at Milford Hills in Watertown WI on September 16th, 2023.Our hopes are to hold this event annually at Milford Hills but also to hold similar events in other areas of Zorland in the near future. Our vision is that someday Zor will have its own Sportsman’s Club as the major Temple Fundraiser. We realize that by asking our Nobles to support this event that we are taking dollars from our own, however the impact that was left on non-Shriners that participated at this year’s event was impressive and we are only looking to grow and to obtain outside sources to support this event. As a reminder the dollars you sponsored will go toward your gift to the General Fund at the Parade of Glory in December at the Fall Ceremonial. As I have stated throughout my term as Potentate, one hand washes the other, you support your Temple your Temple will support you! Again, Thank You for your Support! Potentate Rodney has asked that the “Knickerbocker Degree” be presented. This is something new to Zorland! The play is very short and will be presented just before the tradional Shrine Ritual on Saturday May 14th in Mauston. There are seven (7) speaking parts as well as some extras. NO part is very long and we can have some fun with this degree. It follows the beginning of the Shrine and then the hospital system and its eects on our community as well as the image of the Shrine. For those interested, I will be able to send you a copy of the script along with a presentaon video. The video will be for just those truly interested in being cast. I would like to set a meeng at least for a run through. This would be at some central locaon yet to be determined.I do believe this will be something that we can have some real fun with and sll present some history for those just coming into the Shrine. Also, it’s great when we engage the whole family and they learn what we are all about.I look forward to hearing of your interest. Please contact me with your interest or quesons.
