Include informaon for the month of April 2022.Greengs Brothers, Ladies, Family and Friends, I gave my Monthly arcles the heading that I did because as many of you know, my lovely Lady Mary and I do a lot of traveling for Shrine and Masonic events all over the state and across the country! The long drives give us lots of me to think, plan and discuss. Our travels lately have taken us to Houston, Texas to see our son and his family, as well as aend the Inaugural Ball for the new Arabia Potentate, Ralph “Corky” Bynum and his Lady RuthAnn as we have goen to be good friends with them over the last few years. From Houston, we ew to Las Vegas to aend the East/West Shrine Bowl and its various events, and spent a couple extra days hanging out with 14 other ZOR Divan and Past Potentates and their Ladies who also journeyed out for the game. Aer being in Las Vegas, we ew back to Houston for a couple more days with family and aended a chili cooko at Arabia Shrine that was sponsored by the Arabia Alchemist Unit. We had an unevenul drive back home aer 12 days on the road, which allowed us to reect on the events we had just aended. In the next few weeks we’ll be ‘Behind the Wheel’ as we travel to the Clown Party, Shrine/Mason Day in Tomah, and a number of Club and Unit meengs.I would also like to explain my Potentates Pin design that I have chosen for this year to represent me. The red scooter represents the ZOR Mavericks unit that I have been a member of for the past 30 years. The scooter, as well as the uniform being worn by the rider is a close representaon of our scooter and present uniform. The Mavericks started in 1984 and were named the Mascoun Mavericks as many members were part of the Mascoun Shrine Club that is based out of Waushara, Marquee, Green Lake, and Winnebago Counes. Someme in the 1990’s, the name was changed to ZOR Mavericks. We ride 1986 Honda Spree Mopeds, and parcipate in about 25 parades a summer. We used to parcipate in 35 parades each summer, but needed to cut back as members aged out. Some of the founding and long-me members of the unit are Harvey Reilly and the late Paul Handa, Bill Reier, Bill Downie, Bill Seaman, and Irv Heller. Other long-me members include: Bill Drecktrah; Jon Barthel; Roger Barthel; Jacob LaBlanc; Bill Schmitz; John Ambrose; Larry Severson; Al Hia; Dick Jarvis; Darrell Smith; myself, plus a few new Nobles who help to keep the group funconing well.We have lots of events planned for the year, so we hope to see you as we “Scoot Thru ’22.”Rodney LaBlanc Montello, WI • rmlablanc85@gmail.comA MESSAGE FROM YOUR ZOR POTENTATEHELP US SAVE PRINTING AND MAILING COSTSSign up to get your ZEPHYR news magazine via e-mail: E-mail: zorsubmit@gmail.comBecome a Friends of Zephyr. August 27th our Maverick unit, joined by the Funsters paraded in Kingston in between rain showers. Mary, Lexie and I also hosted a ZOR Shrine picnic at our place in Montello on August 27th. Over 100 Shriners and family members had a great day of fun and fellowship and a spectacular array of delicious food in spite of the rainy day!! A special thanks to Leonard and Jennifer Pickett for grilling the various meats and for the wonderful Cajun shrimp boil and a couple of desserts! I also need to thank my sister, Gloria, for her help in preparing food and keeping the buffet full. Thank you to our son and daughter-in-law, Jacob and Kessa for the corn and the cast iron pot to cook it in! Thanks also to Steve and Mary Ellen Peterson, Larry and Jill Hanson and Roger Keller for their help throughout the day and anyone else who assisted with food prep and clean up! Mary and I traveled to the Houston, Texas area to meet our new granddaughter and visit with our son, Ben, daughter-in-law, Alyssa, and Miss Avery (almost 2). It was a good, but very hot visit. I did attend a couple of Arabia Shrine Temple club meetings while there. Saturday, September 10th, we attended the Hayward Musky Shrine Club ATV/UTV rally north of Spooner and put about 130 miles on the UTV. We had a good day of riding and visiting with our Northwoods Shriners. The Musky Shrine Club had a good turnout, with a nice dinner and a rafe after the ride. In the next month, there are many events coming up: parades in Wisconsin Dells and River Falls; the Potentate Party in River Falls on September 30th; the Shrine Football game at UW - River Falls on October 1st; and the Shriners PGA golf tournament in Las Vegas. The Sportsman’s Rafe drawing will be held in Eau Claire on October 15th. October 18th is the Honored Ladies Luncheon in McFarland and a Divan meeting, as well as a Stated/Quarterly meeting will follow in Madison. October 19th Mary and I, along with 41 fellow travelers will embark on our Fall Potentates Tour to the Eastern States. October 26th is the Sahara Shrine Club dinner in Watertown. November 4th is the St. Croix Valley Shrine Club dinner and auction, and November 12th is the Statewide Masonic Day of LIght in conjunction with our Wisconsin Grand Lodge! We always continue to look for new members and nd it easy to engage our current members in our fun and fellowship as we “Scoot Thru ‘22!”Rod

Paents may need to wear a back brace as part of their recovery, which will be custom-made for them in our orthocs department. In rare situaons, if a vertebra is severely out of alignment or if a child remains in pain aer other forms of treatment, spinal fusion surgery may be needed from one of our skilled, experienced physicians.RehabilitaonOur team of physical and occupaonal therapists are highly trained in addressing a multude of dierent diagnoses. With regard to non-operave and post-operave management of injuries, we are able to tailor our treatment strategies to the paent and their needs–whether it be using crutches to get around at school or progressing back to playing a high-level sport. We use the most current evidenced-based pracce when ulizing modalies and strengthening techniques following injury or surgery and work closely with the medical providers to make sure the paent is making progress and meeng their goals as expected.Specializing in treang pediatrics also gives us a clear lens of how treang a young athlete diers from treang a high school athlete and the importance of using high-level training when appropriate. Our therapists have addional experience treang athletes who may use a wheelchair to play basketball, a sled to play hockey or a prosthesis to go snowboarding. It is crucial to consider all aspects of an athlete’s life and not just their performance on the court or the ice, but how their rehab will aect their ability to engage in their everyday acviesIn conclusionUnfortunately, it is impossible to eradicate all risks our Minnesota winters or winter sports pose. However, ensuring proper protecon during sports is one way to reduce the risk of injury to athletes. Wearing a helmet to ski or snowboard or full pads to play a hockey game is important to provide the maximum protecon to our athletes. Wearing good winter are and using a broad-based stance to walk on the ice and snow can help to reduce the risks of falls when out and about on slippery sidewalks and driveways.Shriners Children’s is one of the world’s greatest philanthropies and has evolved into an internaonal health care system for children, able to treat many health care issues including orthopedic condions, spinal cord injuries, burns and cle lip and palate. All children receive care regardless of the families’ ability to pay. Our centers vary regionally in terms of the range of condions they treat.Shriners Children’s Twin Cies is a specialty clinic focused on the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric orthopedic impairments and injuries. Inially we served a six-state region providing care for some of the most dicult congenital deformity cases, such as children born with their feet facing the wrong way. Some of our paents required over a dozen major surgeries before they were 18. As me went on, we have expanded the range of services we oer to include common injuries. We recently relocated to a new facility in Woodbury where, under one roof, we have a skilled and knowledgeable medical team consisng of orthopedic surgeons and physician assistants, physical and occupaonal therapists, prosthec and orthoc providers, radiology technicians, child life specialists and licensed social workers. This collaborave approach allows us to treat a wide spectrum of paents with diagnoses ranging from cerebral palsy to ankle sprains. Please think of us as a resource and partner when you have paents who may benet from these services and skills.Allyce Fisk, PA-C, MMS, is an orthopedic physician assistant at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Rebecca Rouse, PT, DPT, is a physical therapist at Shriners Children’s in Woodbury.Connued on next pageConnued from previous page+-!('-SVVYPUN33*0 DUDWKRQ)ORRULQJQHW3LQH6W_0DUDWKRQ:,2L]PU:VYLUZVU5(6,'(17,$/&200(5&,$/Comstock Tire2413 S. As a child I lived in Wausau, Westeld, and Manawa. After graduation from Little Wolf High School, I attended UW-Stout in Menomonie. In 2005 I made Eau Claire my home and have lived there since! I am married to my best friend and business partner; Linda, and togeth-er, we have 4 grown children; Morgan, Channing, Mason and Leighton. We also have a 12 year old Black Lab, Bolo. Since 2004 Linda and I have been running a successful real estate business covering the NW corner of Wisconsin. We became empty nesters 4 years ago. When we are not in the ofce we enjoy traveling the world, rehabbing homes, exploring new business ventures, spending time with family (near and far), making memories with friends, going on “adventures”, being “foodies”, spend-ing time at the lake, and truly embracing life! My passion for the Shrine goes back decades as I am a legacy Shriner (Grandfather, Father, Brother). As a child my Grandpa used to take me to the Tangier Shrine Circus in Omaha, Nebraska. I remember meeting the elephants and now wonder if they are the same elephants that greet my nephews and I at Zor circuses. Even as a young boy, I knew this organiza-tion was extraordinary. As I have grown, the friends, mentors, and well…family that I have been able to meet throughout the world, but especially the state and Eau Claire, have been second to none. Masonry and Zor Shrine have been an excellent catalyst in forging bonds of friendship. I am so thankful that the members and past leaders of Mehara Shrine Club were as encouraging and open about their experiences, lending me an ear as needed, and offering advice as I rst volunteered in a leadership position. I never imagined those interactions would lead me to where we are today! Shiners are and always will be one of the greatest blessings of my life. Thank you for allowing me to serve you in this position!! I am hopeful to be able to serve you for many years to come. When you see Linda or I please come on up and say hi, we would love to get to know you!DIVANDIVANDIVANDIVANGet to know your Get to know your October 15TH, 2022 2PMOctober 15TH, 2022 2PMEACH

Membership is our challenge; we each must work on bringing new members into our temple. It is time to share the Daughters of the Nile story. Our most vital tenents are charity, friendship, and truth. We are second, only to the shriners, in donating to the Shriner’s Hos-pitals and Healthcare for children. It was announced at the last Supreme Session, that we donated $3 million to the children. In order it keep our organization alive and growing into the future, we must take every opportunity to “proudly” represent and reach out to all eligible ladies and extend an invitation to join this wonderful order. The Shrine family is just that, a family that works together and is lled with activities, lots of fun, and always food!Past Queens and Princesses attended a lunch at Buck and Honey’s to honor Junior Past Queen, Sue Buehler. She was presented with a DON ornament for her collection, and a Stepping Stone Certicate (donation to the DON Foundation). August 27th was the Zor Fall Picnic at the LaBlanc home. Even rain did not stop everyone from having fun and enjoying the fellowship! I am excited to be participating in the Potentates Fall Tour October 19-26, 2022 and encourage others to join in the experience. “Oh, the places we’ll go and the things we’ll see!”The Ceremonial and Parade to Glory is coming up on Saturday December 3, 2022 in LaCrosse. DON will be hosting a Cookie Walk as one of our fundraisers. Plan on purchasing delicious homemade Christmas cookies. We all must become involved in some way: i.e., attending sessions, being on a committee, donating to projects and even baking cookies! Don’t forget, it’s all about the children.DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE, ITS WORTH YOUR WHILE!Future activities includes: a Social Media speaker, book donation, bobbing for pumpkins rafe, Salvation Army Bell ringing, Honor Flight Quilt, making Christmas cards and box-es, Holiday cocoa and spice jars fundraiser, decorating cookies and cookie exchange.Proud to be a Daughter of the Nile,Queen Mitch BehlkeLeft to right: Lois Hoornstra, Renae Boydston, Peg Jones, Kacy Crawford, Kate Smillie, Queen Mitch Behlke, Karen Schwarz, Sue Buehler, Sharon Bollig, Marcia Seybold, and Judy Emerson.Left to Right: Beth Schaefer, Potentate Rodney LaBlanc, and Queen Mitch Behlke

Page 18 Zor Zephyr Magazine • www.zorshriners.comGreetings Nobles and Ladies,This month will be devoted to talking about the new mobile mem-bership card on your cellphone and also reminders of some important dates. I hope some of you have been able to download your digital Shrine Membership card to your cellphone without too many issues. The pro-cess to download the application onto your cellphone is quite simple and straight forward. In the Septem-ber issue of the Zephyr, we included the instructions on how to download the app to your cellphone and they are included again this month in case you missed them. For the members of ZOR who do not have a cellphone that can have the app downloaded, there has been some 2023 stickers that will be mailed to the temple. If you do not receive a notice from Imperial, please contact the ofce to arrange to pay your dues. Remember if you have not paid your dues for 2022, they are due now along with your 2023 dues which according to Imperial by-laws have to be paid by December 31, 2022. If your dues are not paid by December 31, 2022 for both 2022 and 2023 as of January 1, 2023 you are not eligible to participate in any Shrine functions. These functions include being able to vote or partic-ipate on any matters for both your respective clubs and units. You will not be able to attend or vote at the Annual meeting for ZOR. At the Annual Meeting in Janu-ary, we will be doing a 100% mem-bership card check making sure everyone attending the meeting has paid their dues. If you are not current on your dues, you will not be able to attend the meeting. We are all aware that our Shrine membership numbers are declining. In order to keep our organization alive and functioning, each one of us needs to work to help keep our membership numbers growing. I challenge every Noble in Zor to join the Shrine Legacy Program! Do this by bringing in family members to the Shrine – sons, grandsons, sons-in-law, nephews, brothers, cousins, etc. Share your pride in the Shrine with your family! This year, Jennifer “JJ” Craven, First Lady of Shriners International, is chairing Women Impacting Care. Formerly called the First Lady’s Pro-gram, the program’s new name reects what women connected to the fraternity have always done: worked together in support of the patients and families of Shri-ners Children’s. The 2022–2023 theme of the program is The World Is Your Oyster, and it is designed to promote and raise funds to support the care Shriners Children’s offers for sports- and play-related injuries. “What makes our healthcare system distinct compared to other traditional sports injury specialists are our inno-vative and comprehensive treatment options centering around each patient’s individual needs and goals,” JJ said. “This year’s campaign, The World Is Your Oyster, is de-signed to show that we believe in our patients’ grit and determination, and in our healthcare specialists’ exper-tise, so that our patients can overcome challenges with endless possibilities for success and recovery.”Women Impacting Care supports sports-injury care

The reason for such strict rules for paying your dues on me is the insurance provided by ZOR for clubs and unit acvies does not cover anyone who has not paid their respecve dues.As of this wring there are 174 Nobles of ZOR who have not paid their dues for 2022. If you are one of these Nobles, please get your dues paid as soon as possible as your respecve clubs and units need you! This represents 17.09% of our total membership who have a balance and are considered by Imperial to be in arrears. The total dollar amount of Nobles with a balance is $14,455.00. Just think what we could be doing with the funds if all our membership wiped out that $14,455.00!I will have aended the Winter session of the Midwest Shrine Associaon that was held in Green Bay in the middle of February. I met with my counterparts from dierent temples on membership and we all agreed that we need to make a concerted eort to increase our membership in 2022. I will provide more informaon in future arcles. If we all don’t do our part to increase our membership ranks in both the Blue Lodge and the Shrine, we will cease to exist in the year 2035. Membership is not a one person operaon, but it takes all of us to recruit, retain, restore, build relaonships for our great fraternity to survive. If you are a rst line signer for a Noble, no maer how long he has been a member of ZOR, reach out to those Nobles and see how they are doing. If they have not aended a club meeng or funcon, see why, and invite them to the next meeng. Just the same, if the Noble has not paid their respecve dues, nd out if they are experiencing a nancial hardship or other reason. We are here to assist our worthy brothers in their me of need. There are numerous ways we can all assist those Nobles who are experiencing dicult mes and it can be done anonymously.Upcoming major membership event is the Summer Ceremonial and Potentate’s Ball to be held on May 14, 2022 at The Lodge of Mauston in Mauston Wisconsin. So, if you have any Master Masons who are interested in becoming a Shriner this is a great opportunity for the candidates. Page 23October 2022 • Zor Zephyr Magazineby Milt HelmerWhen you rst meet Austin Clark he is your typical teenage, enthusiastic young man, who you never would know has spent the last eight years of his life attending appointments at Shriners-Twin Cities. His story begins when he was 6- or 7-years old playing T Ball like all the other boys. The only difference back then was when he would run to rst base he tended to limp a little. The Clark family thought it might be shin splints, but after a visit to the family doctor X-rays revealed Legg-calve’ Perthes, a degenerative body disease. He was referred to Gillette Hospital. Because Austin’s grandfather was a Freemason, they advised him to get a sponsor and referred him to Shriners in the Twin Cities. From day one, the Clarks learned that Dr Miel-ke had a plan of treatment. Surgery on his hip was the order of the day for young Austin. His ball joint, which is supposed to be round, was football shaped.Sara Clark, Austin’s mom, said “ We did not know where we would have been without Shriners.”The treatment he received, not only helped build his condence, but also expanded his world. Austin said during a recent Shrine Gala, the Shriners showed videos of some of their patients, two of which were outlining the patients and a third one that showed some “bloop-ers” which Austin had a prominent role in. He was even asked for his autograph from Ken Barlow, whose wife works at Shriners.Young Austin loves hockey and for the past 3 years he has been playing sled hockey. Sled hockey is played sit-ting on a tub with skate blades attached. He sits in the tub and propels himself by two shortened spiked point hockey sticks. He likes playing sled hockey because nobody asks what your problems are, they just play and have fun.Austin has traveled to Texas for Camp Perthes and has played in Paralympics in Ely, Minnesota. They are treat-ed the same as any other hockey team and he just loves it.He also has canoed the Boundary Waters, saying “most of the kids are in wheelchairs.”When asked what he wants to do when he grows up, he does not hesitate-- pro wrestling! He knows all the styles of the wrestling business and is eager to get in the ring.He will serve as the parade Marshal for the Little East West Shrine game parade on October 1st and will be the honored guest at the Potentates banquet on Sep-tember 30th at Juniors, River Falls. Austin will also be introduced along with Shrine dignitaries at the game on Saturday.Photo The Clark family are shown under their large maple tree in their front yard at their Coulee Road home in Hudson.
